'Goin' Coastal'

Reedsport OR
Sept 14,15,16 - 2012

Rally Motel: Economy Motel (expect to have 20 room block reserved for registration)

Focal point: Shermans Motorcycle Products, an independent motorcycle shop in Reedsport

Victoria in SMP was very interested in our rally and even volunterred to have the shop as a focal point for rides and a Sat nite buffet.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Located on the southerly Oregon coast at the intersections of hwy's US 101 and OR 38 approx 20 mi north of Coos Bay and same mileage south of Florence.
Situated at the Umpqua River and Winchester Bay mid center of the famous Oregon Dunes orv playground with the Pacific Ocean on the western border and the adjacent Umpqua Lighthouse.
Reedsport has numerous motels with the motorcycle friendly Economy Inn on hwy 101 (38 rooms) managed by motorcyclists Jeff and Kat. Economy in mind was this selection with the appearance of proper maintenance of the motel. Sept is the beginning of the off season. Quoted prices was $56 one bed/$66 two bed. Conti brekie, wireless internet, cable TV and a pool. Several other motels close by for overflow plus Best Western across the street for an upgrade. All motels feature exterior room doors opening to the parking area in front of the rooms.
Reedsport old town is just off Hwy 101 on hwy 38 with shops and an independent motorcycle store and repair, Sherm's Cycle Products. New town on 101 has a Safeway and Price Choppers grocery outlets, fast food with McD's and Dairy Queen.
Victoria at (independent) Sherms Cycle Products was VERY open to our rally. Interesting was the '99 low mi 18K Concours on the sales floor. Was this a sign?  Victoria has the shop available for a Sat eve meal. If we can get a reasonable estimate of diners she will be able to do it $ per plate. Plus being the focal point for ride departures and arrivals.
Reedsport has the marine Umpqua Discovery Center with two dioramas inside and nice views of the Umpqua River. Elk viewing area is just east on hwy 38.
Winchester Bay/ Salmon Marina has several eating choices mostly centered on seafood.
There are many roads to choose ride routes both pavement and adv. Hwy 101 is the most obvious and Smith River Road was recommended for remote riding. All routes TBD upon forthcoming ride inspection.
The info I recieved from the joint USFS and Visitor office is available to us in quantity in brochure and handouts for our attendees.
Having been there only in Oct and Nov it was friendly and pleasant with low traffic. With the Dunes and general tourism being a major summer attraction the Sept time frame is likely optimal for lower traffic and motel pricing.

Will soon re contact the rally motel to lock in 20 rooms and rate. Senior discount was offered.
Best Western 2 blks across street for upgrade. No COG discount.

Just a short ride south towards Coos Bay/North Bend and we have, Charleston, Cape Arago Stae Park adn the Japanese gardens, Shore Acres State Park, Seven Devils Road, Golden and Silver Falls, Smith River Road,  Horsfall beach. A little further we have Bandon, hwy 42S, Powers Hwy (542), Hwy42, Sand Creek Rd.

Many roads, many options, all nice, all "less traveled" too!.

If anyone is interested I can detail out another 250/6 ride. A mini endurance rally of bonus locations with points assigned at or more than 250 miles and to be completed within 6 hours max. A "tiny-weeni" Iron butt".

Let me know, cause it takes time to put these things together!  8)

That'd be cool, it was a fun deal the last time.

Better start working on my pushups.....

This sounds great Bob.

Alrighty then!  I'm on it!  Now where'd I put that Gazetteer?  :)

WE ARE A RIDING CLUB
That was what I was trying to get across to the motel operators and the MC shop in Reedsport.

They at first said:
We don't have MC rallies here.
We don't have a casino.

I said we are not a parade club and likely will have 6 or less in a group.
Ha ha ha  We will put on a riding show.  >:D  :motonoises:

BTW, they were very welcoming and pleased to be considered for our rally.  :-*

As mentioned prior, ride routes will be offered:
Road routes
ADV routes

Nice job on the research, Dan.  I look forward to a weekend on the coast.  Do I earn any bragging rights if I do an ADV ride on a connie without dropping it? :motonoises:

Oh you'll get your "props"....... And you will need them too! HA!  :-*

BTW got that wheel today!

Charlie, Just rememba that we pull the camera out to record before we help to pick up the bike  :D
Thanks for the positive comment on the research. With the months ahead it will be laid out more but typically a regional is just a long weekend.

Headed to Seattle any time soon?  Or do I need to be watching for a box on my front porch?

  RE: 2012 NW Regional
Will be heading down to Reedsport sometime this month to re connect with the motel and MC shop managers.
So possible update by end of January.

Hey Dan,
Can I lead a Saturday ride on this? Since I am heading off to the National in early June I won't be hosting my annual Coast Range Ramble then. I was thinking of a slight variant on the usual route, running from Reedsport to Florence, up Hwy 36 to Cheshire, over to Alpine and Alsea, down Hwy 34 (!!!) and along the Coast back to Reedsport. It would be shorter (about 210 miles) but would avoid the congestion we would otherwise encounter around Eugene, Veneta etc. Let me know if this sounds like a good idea.

Steve

Yea! Steve!
I was going to contact you about a route with you having the area ride experience. The regional planning is ongoing.
Choose the one you want even better offering to lead it!
You may want to consider an ADV route (south and east) But it is your choice. Or just provide the ADV route info?
Your help is greatly appreciated.

Had a delay in getting down to Reedsport earlier this month.
Will leave Mon to check the motel and mc shop again while visiting daughter Carrie.
Taking the dakota pu down for Carrie and riding the Conk back.  Hoping for less than full on rain.  ::)

In Reedsport now to deliver pu. My '01 Conk in back to ride home. Wx not great but hope to ride a bit.
Upper Smith Creek road has free camping so that may be resourced for those who like to do so. Hopefully in Sept it will not be overused but hear you can pitch a tent in many places with some fire rings and occasional outhouse facility.
Stopped on way in to talk to Guy who owns/operates/wrenches Sherm's MC shop. Very experienced so we will have support if needed. Not a Kaw shop and limited off the shelf parts support.
There is a low mi (18kmi) 1999 Conk on the floor 'reduced price' by owner  he said to $2900.
Asked daughter Carrie to support transportation of any local MC breakdown during the event with her truck and Carrie was willing to support.

Called Steve Mustoe, AAD OR, today. He is still going to lead a ride on the Sat with available route map. Thanks to Steve for stepping up to support the NW "Goin' Coastal" regional.
Seeing it is a mainly one day riding event Steve or I will add local points of interest ride(s) for those wanting a shorter route.
It is a beauty of a locale!

Stopped by today at Economy Motel and talked to Jeff and Kat.  ^-^  Nice reasonable people and he rides.  :13:
Verified they can offer the 'truckers rate' aka as 'Bikers Rate'. 1 bed 49.95, 2bed 59.95 plus motel tax of about $4 . Rates do not limit # of occupants per room. The rooms are OK and typical of an economy motel.
Micro and small fridge, basic cable and wireless internet.
You need to CALL in the reservation, doing it online may result in a higher rate. They have had reservations but remember to identify yourself as with the Concours Rally and ask for the BIKERS RATE

BUMP

In Reedsport visiting.
Hope to check out more roads for the regional.
Will ride to the RTE tomorrow in Otter Rock OR.
Wx is cool but dry today.

Would have loved to attend this but you guys need to make it earlier in the summer before hunting season starts. The dates for this one is opening weekend of rifle season and a man has to have priorities...hunting it is... :))

The 'late' summer dates was chosen due to the area is deep in tourism and luxobarge rollo homes within the Nat'l  Dunes Recreation Area earlier in the summer. Keeps the traffic down and motel rates down as well.
The priority has been set.  :great:

Okay, a noob question...

I'm new to the C14 front, just having bought mine a few weeks back (defecting from Club Suzuki : ), and never have been to a rally.

There's a fair-sized group of any-motorcycle riders in the local area (Beaverton, West of Portland) 'burbs that get together for rides and stuff, but just what would one expect at a COG rally?

Thanks,  -UD

Here's my take on a COG rally.  A group of people show up at a central location.  The group may be two riders big, or sixty riders big.  We come from all walks of life, from retail clerks to corporate CEOs, with a large contingent of retirees.  Nobody cares who does what for employment.  Nobody discriminates.  We are a gathering of people who enjoy riding motorcycles, to the point we don't really care what you ride unless it's got really short straight pipes without baffles.  Then we care because it's too damn hard to carry on a conversation.  Organized rides may or may not be offered, depending on the size of the function and the inclination of somebody to organize a ride.  The rally in Reedsport will have a ride led by Steve Mustoe, if that's your thing.  Usually the rides people go on are informal things thrown together the night before or the morning of.
The most important thing is going for a fun ride, with enjoying good company a very close second.  A weekend rally with have some kind of dinner function on Saturday night, and it can range anywhere from a catered buffet to a small group huddled around a grill cooking whatever was found at the local grocery store.  The Reedsport rally dinner will most likely be an a la carte dinner at a local restaurant.  Dinner is usually followed by some announcements, finger-pointing (reCOGnition) and door prizes.
I'm not sure what else to add.  Feel free to come on out to an event and give us your own take on the situation.

That's all part of the enjoying good company.  There might even be a fire to stand around while drinking the beer. :campfire:

I have something I can't get out of on that Sunday, trying to convince my wife to pop down for at least two days of this.

You're not alone.  This year it seems as if everybody has something better to do than ride.  Only three people have registered for Ride the Ribbon.  ???

Yes, and of course RRR I'm commited to camping with my family.  Family comes before riding...I guess  :'(

I will be joining the "rally".  Coming up from Calif (Reno, lake Tahoe). Made reservations at the Best Western for Friday and Sat.  Gathering point is the local motorcycle shop on Sat morning? First time participant.

  Steamer,

Welcome to the show!
No, the motorcycle shop is not slated to be the center of anything other than repair at this time. The shop is also not expected to stock our parts as it is not a dealership.
The motel lot will be a hotspot for meeting.

Ding - Ding- DINNER!  :welcome:

Sat 6 PM, just 'up the hill' from the motel, easy walking distance
(hint; for better service order a little early?, hard to service 25 people at once)

Join the group for the 'offishul'  regional dinner.

Just talked to Jeff at the Economy Motel.  (541) 271-3671

I just want to let you know that I'm a new member and I am planning on joining up with you for the NW Regional Concours rally  in Reedsport.  Since I live in Roseburg, and I have plans on Friday, I'll be coming Saturday morning - I hope to be there around 8:30. It's my understanding that I'll find you in the Rally motel parking lot.

See you then,
Woodie

Hey Woodie,
We'll either be in the parking lot kicking tires, or at a breakfast spot close by.  Look for connies.

Sat Rides!  :motonoises:

Steve Mustoe is still leading a ride north. Steve will also provide a ride map for the Smith River route and that could use a ride leader.
Ride to start @ 9AM in the motel parking lot.

Bob Papalardo is now leading a ride east/south starting with breakfast in Elkton.
"I figure a 8- 8:30am Arlene's breakfast meet then leave at 9-9:30am."

Remember be back before 6 PM for the dinnner at Don's Restaurant.

For anyone wishing to see some of the best local roads east of Reedsport plan on meeting at Arlene's Restaurant between 8-8:30 am in Elkton on Hwy 38 for Breakfast. This is 37 miles east of your hotel in Reedsport on Hwy 38. Impossible to miss and there will be at least one 2001 Blue Concours outside the restaurant (mine).

From Elkton we will depart around 9-9:30 am to Hwy 138 south, then Tyee Rd to Umpqua. From Umpqua we'll head further south through Oregon Wine country to Melrose, then to Reston and over to Tenmile and Hwy 42. From Tenmile and Hwy 42 we'll ride to Coquille and southwest to Bandon on Hwy 42S. Lunch in Bandon then up Hwy 101 to Seven Devils Road to Charleston then over to Shore Acres and Sunset beach. Then back through Charleston and North Bend and up 101 to Reedsport. Then entire trip is about 225 miles with lots of stopping opportunities, gas and food.

If you are interested please email me at bobpappalardo@q.com and I will send you a PDF of the route.

Great weather and a great ride awaits anyone wishing to see the "Land of Umpqua". The route parallels the North Umpqua River from Elkton all the way south along the Tyee Road to the little (and no longer) Town of Umpqua. Passed several wineries, Henry's Estate, Melrose, Giradet, to name only a few we will head back towards the coast on arguably the best State Hwy for motorcycles (Hwy 42 and 42S to the destination town of Bandon by the Sea. Lunch at the "Crab Shack" (not cheap, but oh so freaking good!) then up to historic Charleston and maybe, just maybe Sunset bay, Cape Arago and Shore Acres State Park. (They charge $3.00) but it is a great place with a Japanese garden and a world class view of the Oregon Coast and the Pacific ocean. (You can even see Japan on a good day-------Ah no Sarah Palin will not be there!  :nananana:).

Then back up to Reedsport just in time for a relaxing rest before dinner with all the other riders who did not attend the best tour of the best roads in southwestern Oregon.........sigh.....(their loss!)

So if you are really wanting to see some great roads meet me in Elkton in front of Arlene's (On the rightside of the road in town) between 8:00 am and 8:30 for breakfast with a drop dead departure time of 9:30. Bye!    :) :) :)

I'll maybe be heading west from Melrose area and maybe see some of the group going east on hwy. 38 to the Elkton start point. Since you are in my backyard one of our favorite restaurants is in Umpqua, The Lighthouse Bakery. Actually, that's the whole town. Good cookies! Where is the North route going?

Steve said his north route will be a version of his coastal mtn ramble he puts on yearly.

I'm planning on heading out of Boise Friday morning (solo) to Reedsport.  Just checking if anyone else was planning on heading out of the area then too.

Leaving friday from Seattle area, not too early. I'll probably do the coast and a few inland roads. I-5 probably till Oly or Centralia, then west.

Turnout is looking good!
The MC shop in Reedsport is gone. There is a K shop and other brand shops here in Coos Bay where I am visiting daughter.
I won't be staying at the motel as planned but with daughter in her mothers house in Reedsport.

OK, not sure how the registration cutoff date was set.
BTW  the temps are lower on the coast, cool in morning and late afternoon. I bought my heated clothing but forgot a casual jacket.

I won't be able make it this year.  Between too many family commitments and then my throttle cable just broke it doesn't feel in the cards.

I'm still shooting to make the tech session next month so perhaps I can meet a few of you finally.

Hope everyone has a great time.  Ride safe!

:beerchug:  :motonoises:

If anyone from the northbound group would be willing to text me to let me know where you are as you take breaks, I would be happy to send you a PM with my number so I could possibly meet up with you on the way (I will be leaving Salem within the next couple hours). Otherwise depending where I am I will watch for a pack of Connies. :)

Another great regional rally in the bag.
Great attendance and riding opportunities with optional three 250 mi loops on Sat. Great weather for riding, crazy number of twisty roads!  :motonoises:
We had a good time at the Sat dinner  :103: with additional laughs and door prizes and a few gags.  :))
I won't be able to post photos now as not getting back for a few days. Staying extra time in Coos Bay visiting daughter Carrie.

Dan,

Thanks for hosting the event. Although I had a hard time keeping up with everyone on the "Southern route"....... I am sure everone who joined us on this these "lessor roads" now knows why I will never long for riding the fables "Dragon".. Why would anyone have to when all's you have to do is follow Zack through Douglas County Oregon.  HA!

I had a great time at the rally and the dinner, it was great to see so many "COG" faces again. Thanks!  :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

I really wanted to come up for this ride. I miss riding with you guys, and it's a great area to ride.

So this is what I did instead - following Linda (Silky) up Hwy 1 on the way to Pt. Reyes.

Cheers guys. Glad it was a good weekend for all of us.

The motel was Economy, but the rally was Deluxe! Rode  the coast home, across the Columbia, up 101 then east on the freeway. Very little fog but a liitle cool until afternoon. The rides were paced well and great roads, why would anyone leave the nw this time of year. I will get my Connie finished this week. The C-10 seems nimbler in the tight stuff over the C-14. Too much fun, if you didn't make it, we didn't miss ya.

Congrats Dan on putting on yet another good event, noting from the thread.
Bummer I couldn't make it, but life throws a twist into the mix sometimes

:great:

First order of business is to say

THANKS, DAN!

Dan Paulsen is The Man (in the Aerostich suit).  He volunteered to host the 2012 NW Regional, and he did a fabulous job.  He scouted a great location, he made all of the arrangements, and he rounded up all the necessary supplies including door prizes and road maps of the state of Oregon.  That pile didn't last long.

We had great riding in several different directions, and the restaurant that seated us for dinner was outstanding in their service.  The ride home up the coast turned out to be very nice, and even when I split off and headed east in Tillamook the riding was still great.  Oregon never fails to provide great riding.  :great: :motonoises:

The turnout was slightly bigger than the Bun Cooler.  The very light turnout to events throughout the summer had us worried nobody was going to come, but we were pleasantly surprised when we got 33% more participants than what registered for the event.

Garsk, I really appreciate the appreciate!  :))
It was very rewarding organizing the rally!  :13:

Any time you want to repeat the experience, just say the word. :)

For a recap we had I believe 37 registered (+3 who did not register or go to the dinner=40) for the rally. Above avg.
As NWAD Charlie mentioned the dinner event at Don's retaurant went fine with the staff delivering the meals in record time.
Thanks to Charlie for the 'go for it' attitude he had as I presented and arranged the event. We have a very good AD as he has been invloved in nearly every event.
We had fun during dinner with the door prizes and plenty enough to go around.
The economy motel delivered and the asst manager, she was on top of everything and took care of us. After our dinner we got her and the motel staff a chocolate cream pie as a thank you.
A special shout out to Darrell Anderson. The COG Membership Director. As I forgot to include him with the other COG officers and note that he was the Over the Pond selectee had just returned form Europe. Welcome home Darrell!
Former NWAD and now BCAAD second time around, Dave Owen was the long distance traveler. Dave narrowly beat out the other BC riders known as  'the usual suspects'. Dave was awardwed with a tube of BUTT-AID cream.  :rotflmao: Formerly known as Nanook of the North, Dave will have to come up with another as he is relocated in retirement in the (relative) sunbelt of BC now. As a self confessed merchandiser the warning is beware if Dave pulls out a Sears Roebuck catalog, RUN!  :D
As A riding club it would be unworthy to not have some good routes to share on the Sat outings. Thanks to Steve Mustoe for planning the north loop and providing a map for the Smith River route. Bob Papalardo for organizing the south loop and Zack for leading this route, it was a challenge as it was very, very twisty/turny!. Idaho Bob for leading the Smith river ride. There were many smiles and much appreciation for the rides.
I had a great time! :1rij:
