2019 Longest Day Ride

Like Dan I won't be able to attend either. I volunteered to do a civic duty same day long ago. Basically helping with a oral board interviews for suspective police applicants. Lots of fun will be  had by the board.

Should be a great day for a ride!  Unfortunately for me, the boss had volunteered me to help a friend of ours move that day.  You might see me at breakfast, but can't do the ride.  :'(

We got within 30 miles of Winthrop.  Then Grant decided to pretend he had been sentenced to hard labor in prison and started breaking rocks.  There was a big one in the road which he turned into a lot of little rocks with his front wheel.

https://photos.smugmug.com/COG/i-5PmBpkK/0/f805b067/L/DSCF8034-L.jpg

I got to ride into Winthrop and buy some tools, and some really cool guy named Dale went into town with me and offered to wait there in case we needed something else which he would procure and bring back to us.  Grant was able to bend the wheel back into enough of a round shape to hold air, and we went back the way we came.  Unfortunately there was no cell service where we were, so it took a while to get the message to Dale that we didn't need anything more from the store and he continued on his merry way.  Dale is the hero of this story.

Grant is a military veteran, and has earned a nickname with a military ring to it.  From this day forward I will always think of him as Major Damage, Marine at large. When it absolutely, positively must be destroyed, he's your man.  :) ;)

Dang...that's hard time.

Glad he's okay from that. I had a buddy who did that to his BMW while riding thru fog. Both wheels hit a piece of concrete and raked off the brake caliper as a bonus.

Chris  has some video of the big rock becoming little rocks... Yes I destroyed the rock to protect my COG brothern behind me that's my story and I am sticking to it.
Super big thanks to Dale for waiting not know if we could even contact him or not. Thank you Charlie for the tool run it held air all the way home. Also thanks to the entire group of riders for hanging with me, can't think of a better example of why one should ride with the COG....

Funny  you should post Harry, last year on the way to Sisters for the lava run I ran into a ditch this ride the ride the ditch literally jumped into the road in front of me. Seems like Grant's adventures with the COG could be comic strip.  :))

Here is the "moment" of Grant "The Crusher" in action.  Somehow, I missed all the pieces.

I'll upload the video and some other pictures after church in a couple hours.

Wow!!
Hitting a BFR to save your COG brethren and then fixing the wheel with a BFH.  :You_Rock_Emoticon:
        Yer my hero.....

Way to go Grant!!

Ride safe, Ted

The North West Area and I am sure all the other area's too, have a long history of assisting a rider with a damaged bike. I speak from experience when I fell off a borrowed Harley on my way the Idaho Falls Nationals.

I also remember another rock in the roadway where the front wheel wasn't bent but the tire had a BIG hole in it. A tow truck was needed to bring the bike back to the Lewis and Clark resort. There was a rumor going around that the bike and tow truck went into the river during the Banquet that evening. Someone we all know bite hard on that one.

Oh, and before you ask why someone just didn't plug the tire so it could go under it's own power, 5 plugs put together would not seal the hole. We Also learned having a axle tool to remove the front axle could be handy.

Harry, you might have to start a comic strip about the adventures of Major Damage.

I am glad everyone made it home OK.

Thanks, I like that idea. It really is about us on rides doing the best we can to avoid any damage along the way. Being on two wheels, we certainly are at higher risk than the cage drivers. And yet, we seem to have more fun than the average driver.

Dam Ted I didn't think anyone would think that was serious, now I got to come clean  :'( Protection of the riders behind me wasn't really why I hit the rock. I knew that it was too late to avoid it and made the decision to hit it squarely to avoid having it wrecked me. To not claim false valor I must admit crushing the rock was an act of self preservation I wasn't jumping on a grenade  ::)  However I was worried about not being able to pass proper warning to my fellow riders and therefore happy I was the only one who sustained any damage and no one was hurt. :motonoises:
But I purposely crushed it to protect others sounds good huh :D

Up at the Observation Point above the lakes.  Did we go over and look at the view?  Nah...we were more interested in telling tales of what we didn't do, but want everyone to think we did.  ;)

Chris

See?...now, next time, let the BMW take the lead. They really good at busting rocks. I know.  :-[ :))

Looks to me like Chris barely missed the rock Grant wacked.  :beerchug:
I was busy looking around at the gorgeous sights around me, glanced down...saw the rock explode...said a short expletive inside my helmet and was past it before I knew what happened.  My guardian angel was working hard at that moment.

Chris

Chris, never reply to Grant as a Guardian Angle.  :-\
Even if you accidentally infer it!!

"Clearly" Grant hit the rock so that you wouldn't..  :great:

But, most of us don't know Grant from Charlie err Chris.
Soo, which person is Grant?
I suspect it's the ugly guy, but there are sooo many to choose from.
{The worst is the guy in the red gear}.  :nananana:

Ride safe, Ted

Grant is the one standing under the WELCOME sign and giving a wave in pic 3rd from the bottom. looking at the pic, Andy is half way blocking the open sign then Charley's smiling face  is to Andy's right.

Wow I was lucky!!! I thought I was straight up when I hit the rock but I was leaned over crazy!!! I think the good lord was with us all Chris, counting my blessings!!!

Yet another blessing and reason to be a COG member Craig Scott not with us on the ride but another great NW area members just called after hearing of my misfortune with a very fair price on an almost new wheel. Thank you Craig  :beerchug:

Wow that is major wheel damage all right. Then riding it home.
Grant glad you rode it out and upright!
Much bigger rock and damage than mine a few years ago on the Three Pass Blast ride coming down from Chinook Pass.

Hey guys off to get the new PR-4s mounted as my replacement wheel from Craig Scott got here today. :) Wheel is used but may as well be brand new and price well let's just say the people here make COG membership well worth it  :great:
THANK YOU CRAIG,  I through in a tip for you trouble with boxing it up and getting it sent out so fast... ;)

Dam they sent me an 18" instead of a 17" front tire, :-[ at least the rear is right... Well they are going to exchange it so only out the riding time ::)
