2019 RIDE THE RIBBON

It's time to block off the last weekend in August for RIDE THE RIBBON.  We will be staying at the same motel this year.

AMERICAS BEST in John Day.

Bob has handed the reigns over to me this year, he will however, be there with all his knowledge and experience.  I will be doing contact with the motel and making supper plans for Saturday.  I can't fill his shoes, but I have a computer so feel free to contact me here or msg me.
This is a friendly get together of like minded riders

I am also considering looking for a printer to make us a shirt.  anyone with knowledge of a good inexpensive one let me know.  Also, if a AD or AAD has any trinkets to offer up, we would appreciate them.  Thanks!

We are looking forward to a fun weekend.

:welcome:

I edited above post.  I had May on my mind,  early in the morning, and I did not multi[-task well.  Sorry for the confusion.

:))

We have finally gotten the rates for the Ribbon Ride.  Americas Best is 100.00 a night.  It is 10.00 dollars cheaper for one bed at days inn, but we have had some bad experiences there.  Better to pay the extra and be able to communicate with the group, if need be.

Ashley is the office manager.  When you call mention Ride the Ribbon.  Feel free to call me w/ questions.      :ecomcity:

248 819 1500

update:  I called the motel last night.  I was quoted 99.00.  I asked if they had discounts.  Yep.  $89.00 for seniors.

For a newbie to this ride...what is it exactly.  The name is catchy, but doesn't tell me much.

Thanks,
Chris

This is a meet and greet.  We meet at the motel Friday, gassed up and ready to ride Saturday morning.  People figure out who is riding with whomever.  get up Saturday morning and meet for breakfast across the street.  kick stands up 9 am, to a destination of your choice.  last year we had 3 groups head out.

Main group heads east on hwy 26, to hwy 245, over Mt Dooley and the little dragon.  Then west on the 11 to Sumpter, big swap meet and food break.  continue w on the 7 to the 26 back to john day.
180 + corners going over mt Dooley.

make a few stops at points of interest.  artesian well, historical marker...
Hope to see you there this year.  There is  also a camp ground a few blocks away

Really like how you told readers when, where and duration in the announcement.

Past announcements of some rides have only stated ride titles (omitting where, when, how long) - doing so gave the impression (to me as a newcomer) that rides were an insiders' thing and not very open to newcomers.
Your post shows openness and welcome...  :beerchug:

Just called and the man answering the phone was quoting me @$110...with a Senior Discount.  I'll call tomorrow and try to speak to Ashley.

Update:  Called and spoke to Ashley.  All is well.  :)

We either choose a different road or go on the same road the other direction for a different view?  Form different groups and ride with different people?  It is a meet and greet, and eat.  we are an informal group getting together and we plan the night before, and put plan in action the next morning.

Got my shift covered, signed up and reserved room at the recco joint in JD. Anyone else heading over from Eugene on Friday afternoon?

I was so tempted..but why Labor Day weekend, one the heaviest traveled and patrolled holidays, though there are some nice remote ares there.

Labor Day weekend in John Day is very quiet, and traffic in that part of Oregon is pretty non-existent.  Coming from Moses Lake should be a piece of cake.  I always come and go over Chinook Pass, and all I have to deal with is beautiful scenery.

On seeing the comment about heavily patrolled holiday.  I have seen maybe 3 patrol cars in the last 3 years.  Not sayin there aren't more, but the traffic is very light in that part of the state.  One year I traveled from pilot rock to Mt Vernon and passed ONE vehicle coming from the opposite direction, and one was going to pull out after I passed...

Well then, I plan on toning down my normal riding style and may just make this storied event.

I just learned that my mother and two of my sisters are going to be vacationing in the Yellowstone area in September, so I will be using my fun money to join them this year.  Y'all have fun and I plan to be there next year, epipens in my pocket.

I'll be taking it easy and leaving Calgary on Thursday August 29th to get to John Day OR for Friday afternoon. I'll probably stop for the night in the Spokane area. Time/traffic and national park permitting, I'd prefer to cross at Carway and go through Glacier National Park. Otherwise, the quicker route should be crossing at Eureka.

If anyone else is riding a similar route to the rally and would like to meet up or ride together, contact me.

Cheers

Jes

So what number have you guys called to talk to Ashley, or anyone? I have tried all day the number for front desk on the website, as well as the 877 number, and I get no answer or a useless business account person. Sounds like I may drag a few family with me.

I called 1-800-452-4899 and spoke to Frankie. He told me Ashley wasn't there at the moment. He looked up her previous recent bookings for COG to find out how she entered the discount in their system. He said he did the same rate for me as she did for the others. The booking receipt they emailed me shows (541) 575-1462 as a phone number. I suppose you could try that number too.
August 30th is $97.75 + $9.58 tax
August 31st is $106.25 + $10.41 tax
Extra day - Sept 1st is $97.75 + $9.58 tax. The average daily rate is quoted as $100.58 (not including taxes).

Cheers

Jes

Thanks Jes,  (541) 575-1462 is the number I have called all day...will keep on it. Always have a tent with me as backup.

Looking forward to the Dooley loop and meeting summa you folks. Been looking over my Benchmark at all those forest roads, lots of good loops available. :great:

I booked a room with two double beds at the John Day Motel (good reviews) hoping my son would be able to attend, it looks like he may have to work that weekend, I'll know for sure tomorrow. If he works I'll look for a roomie, the room rate is $84 per night, so roomie rate $42 a night. I'll update tomorrow eve.
The Ribbon ride is some of the best riding in Oregon, and as others have said pretty light traffic for a holiday weekend, and the Sumpter swap meet is a fun stopover too.
Sadly won't be the same without fainting Charlie along, but we'll suffer through  :'(. This ride has always been a blast, even the year I got heatstroke!
Bob.

UPDATE Turns out My son Raymond will be able to make the run again this year (he loved it last year) so the extra bed won't be available. Sorry.

Not a problem.  It does help to have a head count, so now we know there is another person.  The more the merrier. :beerchug:

Two places in town.  Dino Mart, go inside, they will help-or-s canyon Rd.  At the y.  Gas station takes your money and you cross road to pump.  Please get your gas on before Saturday morning

So with the one week countdown in place I did the commitment shakedown on my potential sidekicks. +1 for sure is my nephew Josh on his brand new Gixxer 1K.

Another guest is still at a strong maybe, needs to get his BMW roadworthy and find accommodations for a dog. I give him a 50/50 chance of showing.

Finally my son who just started a new job in Bend and needs to get his neglected ZX-10 sorted, is a weak maybe. Could show for a night or two, but only a 30% chance of that. (Adulating is hard and inconvenient at times.)

If I need to formally register 1 as a guest just tell me, or put me down for +1.75.

All is good.  I, myself, have one guest not registered.  We will have a final head count when every one shows up.  We do have one dog coming. Not sure if we should count his head or not.

I hear you count dog tails to be official. I wish I could bring my Ginger along but I don't think she would enjoy 4 days of being tossed side to side in the heat.

Yep, makes it toasty for the ATT GATTers, or they just start early, pick a route that gets them back to pool-side by say 1 or 2 PM and the consumption of cooling adult beverages commences. Repeat.

That was a great ride, really nice folks and the roads and scenery were outstanding. 865 twisty miles in 3 days, I need a new set of tires now.

I would have loved to have joined you all. And I really appreciate the phone call more than you guys and gals will ever know. For those than may not know Dale called me to find out if I was still kicking or what. Yeah still here but staying close to home. I went to the Bun Cooler against the advice of my Doc but I'm hard headed any ways. I've been poked, stabbed, jabbed and bruised about everyway known to man kind for a little blood. It seems my veins see a needle and run the other way. My fun meter is pegged and they still can't tell me what's wrong.

As I talked with Dale, we agreed he would tell Bob Rainey he made me mad and I wasn't coming back. I thought it would be fun for a little while but it got ruined when Bob had to say hi. This is sorts stuff is what makes this group what it is. A big family.

Speaking of if you remember John Ailtser who was with the guy on the Bergman and rode the Burgundy C10. John goes under the knife tomorrow for prostrate cancer. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers. Tim

Missed you Tim, and will keep John in our thoughts. Heavy Rotacion', it was great getting to ride with you and Dak the Magnificent Breaker (sp), a good day and even my ride home a day early was well spent. Keep healing up.

Thanks Michael, great pictures btw, the big redneck kid texted them to me. You guys be sure to get ahold of me if you're ever down this way.

Some pics.

I didn't know what "Ride the Ribbon" meant till I got there.  From what I understand, the "ribbon" isn't just riding in the mountains there, but to ride the roads along the John Day "River".  There's a North fork, a Middle fork and a South fork.  I said "river" because it looks like more of a creek to me, but it did make for some interesting and fun rivers.

I'm always fascinated by the old barns and houses.  In one ride, I saw what at one time was a nice house with the other buildings...derelict.  Windows gone.  But still, I wonder....what stories those old abandoned buildings would tell if they could?  The dreams of the people who built them.  The laughter of the children.  The hopes of the families as they poured their sweat out in making a life out there.

This is a church from the town of Fox.  It stands next to a junkyard.  Almost all the stores are abandoned.

The roads in this area are full of twists, turns...and surprises.  Yes, that is a Conestoga wagon.

Even if there isn't a "river" to follow, the road has twists and turns to delight any motorcyclists.

As Nancy and I rode out on Monday morning, the sun was coming up and made for some interesting effects.

All the while I was taking this beautiful scenery in and enjoying the curves, I was thinking of how this is available to anyone coming to the National rally next year.

Chris

Great roads, great folks, a good time cut short. Hope to see you all down the road again.

Ben, there are some pictures which could use a little explanation. For instance the two animals strapped together. Can't read the signs hanging on them. Where they strapped together for ease of transportation or something else?  Thanks.

I think this is called the Little Tail of the Dragon.  I slowed down in it.  There were some rocks in places.  And no guardrails.  And frankly, I wanted to see what the scenery was like.

Tim,

I can commiserate with ya!
Been riding with COG since 1997 on a new then '98 C10. 4 C10's and 300k mi continue riding a C10 converted to a C12 with the ZRX1200 engine and front forks/brake. (ZGRX1200) aka 'couldabeen' as Momma Kaw could have used the off the shelf parts to upgrade the bike as Dan Bergen did.
After attending 10 or so each of the BC and RTR and regional my rides longer than a day may be over since the heart bypass operation 2 years ago. Can still do a 400 mile day but not days....
So still riding local rides. Still have multiple MC's.
RIDE ON!!!

Tim

Well Tim I thought you would know this by now, but here goes. When a girl antelope and a boy antelope fall in love, they sometimes decide to make baby antelopes. (Anteluppies?) So after dinner, wine, and some expensive jewelry...

SO Ukiah has a crazy political store owner who has made his artistic statement about what the governor (top) is doing to the state/people of OR (bottom). My nephew Josh thought it was funny.

Well Ben I thought it could be something like that BUT I have never seen mother nature needing a helping hand from a ratchet strap before. Would have been a little easier to find a smarter Buck.  ;)

Haha, i was trying to remember Josh's name last week, it's the same as mine, I'm an idiot. I had so much fun at this event, I hope Ken is interested in putting it on for 2020, if needed I am glad to step up and help. Thinking of that lovely heat and wide open sweepers is really helping me cope with winter! Dakota got a Sumo to bring, still top speed limited but at least it's not a suicide shifter!

It was sure the high point of the event for me to get to ride with you and share stories, that Dakota is quite the rider...I loved following him to watch how he smoked that suicide shifter across Dooley pass and smell his brakes cooking to self destruction. Still roads I need to ride in that area, so maybe we will so a 20 20 event.

Bob passed the banner to us year before last and we had been planning on continuing this year.  In January I contact the motel and get the rates locked in for us.
feel free to msg me with anything you may want to happen or include in our informal meet and great.
Last year we talked about getting this a sanctioned ride, but in the past very few people wanted to pay higher fees to make this a ride.

The bun cooler has a high fee, but that includes insurance, door prizes and more that are paid for before you even show up.  The way we did it last seemed a different way to go.  We are planning to basically do it the same this year.

It was my first COGish event so I can't compare it to a more structured one but i was very happy with the informality. A repeat of the process seems appropriate to me. I really liked the T shirt design, wear it a lot. Can't wait, like Zxtasy said, lots more to explore around there.

If I was in charge of things up there in the NW I would make all events free and call them meet and greets, ride to eats, or motorcycle socials. The camaraderie alone is worth the trek, who cares about that pair of socks I won at that rally thing y'all had in years past. :))

Except for the National of course. :truce:

Registration is now open, click here.
Do you have a room at rally central yet?

The Heathman Lodge Vancouver, Washington June 15th-19th 2020!
