22nd Annual Volcano Ride

FYI - I could not register using the link, but was able to register when I navigated to the event from the calendar.  If the link doesn't work for you, get to the August calendar, select this event, and register from there.  Note that the meet-up place is in Vader, WA, only the address is listed on the event.

Registered.

I'm trying to decide whether to ride down the night before.  How long of a day do you plan, and what area will we be riding in?

Chris

Chris,
We'll begin the day with breakfast in Vader, followed by a ride up WA506 to WA505, which takes us to WA504 and Johnston Ridge Observatory.  After letting folks take in the sights and outdoor presentation about what happened when Mt. St. Helens blew, we'll head back down 504 to Tower Rd., which is a nice detour around Toutle.  We'll stop for lunch at El Compadre in Castle Rock, and from there we'll explore some back roads on the west side of I-5.  Not really sure yet just how long we'll be out and about, especially if Mjr. Damage is with us, but we should be wrapping things up by or before 5pm.

Charlie,
Did you see that 506 is closed east of Vader at Lacamas Creek? The detour sends you up Military Road to 505. Still gets you where you want to go.

Chris,
If you are going down Saturday morning and want company let me know and we can meet somewhere along 5 or 405 (I'm in Bellevue.)

Looking forward to seeing and riding with ll of you again.

Andy

Charlie do you have a map of the route for my wife.
Dale :)

Not yet.  Give me some time to finish putting together a kitchen for my wife and I'll create a map for your wife.

Wasn't sure I could make it this time, but things worked out and I registered at the last minute or so.  It was a great experience riding with you guys last year on the three blast pass, and I'm looking forward to this ride tomorrow.  See you then....

Les

Had a great time yesterday.  I think at one time there were 12 riders in the group.  It made for interesting seating challenges at the restaurants we stopped at for breakfast and lunch.  I think Charlie took pity on the restaurant staff and about 6pm, we stopped at a gas station and food store for snacks instead of a sit down meal.

Here's a few shots from the trip.

The scene outside of our breakfast stop.  I think there were more Concours bikes there, than interior space inside the tiny restaurant.

On the way.  Charlie made sure to include some twists and turns for our enjoyment.

In the true spirit of COG, Steve fixed two...yes, two...punctures in his rear tire, while Andy and I cheered him on.  The only thing missing from my Bun Cooler training last year, was the beer and about 30 more guys giving suggestions.

I climbed this back in the 9th grade when it looked like Mt. Fuji in Japan - a perfect cone-shaped volcano, and a couple thousand feet higher with glaciers on it.  I remember thinking to myself as we crossed the crater to get to the other side and the true summit, that this was an active volcano, supposedly, and what would it be like if it blew.

The area is still pretty desolate.  And it has been almost 30 years (May 18, 1980).

Great ride and group as always! Thanks for sharing the ride pics Chris! Weather was fantastic albeit a bit warmer than previous. Hopefully Steve and Chris you guys got back ok after the discovery of screws in the rear. I'm wondering now if it was laying around in the parking lot at breakfast.

I did fine, and Steve was doing well when we parted ways at 164th on I-5.

Mine turned out to be a nail.  About 3/4 of an inch was left and it went in diagonally.  I took it out and it is still holding air beautifully.

Chris

What a fantastic ride! Thank you, Charlie, for setting this one up!  Hey Chris, first thing I did when I got home was check Craigslist and YouTube for your model BMW... What a cool bike.  Thanks, Grant, for joining up with me for the last few miles over the hump to Hwy-6...  Hey Rob, you missed our detour/shortcut to I-5...
