Aug 20 midnight ride in Vegas?

Anybody interested in a midnight bark at the moon ride around Lake Mead on Aug 20? Should be a mostly full moon and temps should be high 70's low 80's. Maybe end the ride with a BAB (Big Ace Breakfast). Lemme know and I'll put a route together.

Meet up midnight. Rolling at 12:30. Bfast place in Boulder City opens @ 6a. Or we can hit the Peppermill downtown earlier.

Cool!

Now I'll be the pinhead and ask for clarification.

Breakfast will happen after the ride on Sunday morning at 6am?
(so technically we leave at 12:30AM Sunday morning, 30 minutes after Midnight)

Check. I miscalculated the time space continuum on the flux capacitor.

For those folks considering this lemme know for lodging recommendations. Come spend the weekend in Vegas Baby and get a nice ride in. I can offer tent space and floor/couch space with room in the garagio for your scoot. Mayhap a little BBque and a pool soak on Fri night. A bit of wrenching Sat Morn before nappy time?

T minus 9 and counting (unless you factor in the time space continuum T minus 10 ;D). The Chevron meetup has fresh Krispie Kremes and Hi Octane java for those inclined though I suspect C Man will be bringing his own special blend.  :beerchug:

Got some time today to prep the bike for the adventure over to gambling land.

Really looking forward to this night ride with a group of COGgers. I've obviously ridden at night before but never as part of a pack, and on a full moon no less.

I'm in Vegas, or Henderson - don't know which actually. Gonna take me a nap in prep for tonight's Bark at the Moon.

Wish I could've joined you guys, Mark. I was in Vegas at the airport on my way (flying) home today.
You shoulda BF. I coulda put you on the KiLleR. It was me and Wandring left at around 1215a. Weather was still warm at 90 deg's. About a 3/4 moon diving in and out of the clouds and windy. We hit the lake and the wind died down. Not another vehicle on the road all the way to Overton. Strange sensation at night when the visibility is limited. Felt like I was shagging along and look down and I'm doing 65. Only night critters to worry about here are Jack Rabbit's, coyotes, a possible big horn sheep, wild horse or burro and they are rare. Rode down to Calville bay and showed Keith how the boat launch is now about 300 vertical feet from where it was 15 years ago. On into Overton with the moon showing itself once in awhile illuminating quick peeks of the lake and landscape. Lowest temp on the dash display was 82. Brrrr..... The only other illumination was the high beams eating up the road and glow of the GPS. Stopped in Overton for gas and BS. On through Logandale and onto the 15 So. to Moapa travel plaza and through the valley of fire. On the way up through Valley of Fire we ran across jack rabbit city. I think the condos were on the right side of the road and the bunny bars and casinos were on the left. Now some of these SW jacks can get to the size of large dogs if they are eating good. A couple of them we could have thrown saddles on and road around. I saw one on the side of the road snarling at me and for a bit there I thought I was going to have to break out the Holy Handgrenade (you monty python fans will get it). Keith was riding trail and he said they would wait for me to go by, run across the road and then cross back in front of him. Should have installed those jack rabbit whistles. Through the Valley of Fire State park with a few pucker moments. On the roller coaster roads sometimes your headlight is pointing at the sky and the road dips down and you can't tell where that SOB goes. Time to slow down. Back onto the Lake Shore road heading south we stopped at Rogers Springs. A natural spring just off the road. A spring in the middle of nowhere with a small waterfall. As we rode back south I started suffering from fatigue and getting dingy (Yes, more than normal) having trouble focusing on the road, maintaining a steady speed, making clean entrances and exits. I decided to call it. Stopped and talked with Keith and he said he was feeling the same. Plus he had to ride home later in the day and this would give him the chance to grab some sleep before he returned. So we missed the Dam (Hoover) and Bfast but I think we did the right thing. Rolled into the garagio about 4:15a. It was a nice ride about 200 mile's. 1st ride since getting home from the Nat's for me. Thanks for coming out Keith. It was good to C U again. CU all in Cedar City in Sept.

Mark, I really like this idea. Might have to borrow it for the future. Only one problem with the SE crew doing it as part of a rally.... they'd probably all be smashed by midnight and wouldn't leave the campfire and that would be okay, 'cause it n just wouldn't end well.... :rotflmao:

^^^^ That Sir is so true. We all know the SE area has little self control  ;) :beerchug: :)) :))

Oh now, "self-control" is a relative thing! I have NEVER seen the fireball bottle dropped. Not ONCE!  Or maybe that's just focus..... :))

Looks like you two had a great time! Sorry I missed out!

It was a nice ride Russ but the time change continuum screwed with my inner clock mechanism. Maybe next time plan on kickstands up like 4a and then ride to 12p.  :beerchug: :)

I vote for 9PM.  That's what I did for the meteor ride to DV, as I recall.  Dark enough, but not so late for us early folks.  :beerchug:

9PM sounds better, but at Midnight when we met up, it was still 92 degrees. 9PM would have still been something like 100 degrees - would have kind of defeated the one of the purposes of the night ride I think. ;D

IIRC your DV Meteor ride (which I was bummed to not be able to make) was in a more climate comfortable time period.

I think a 4am in the pitch dark start, ride through sunrise, breakfast in the middle of the ride and done by 11am would be a good heat avoidance ride.

The Bark at the Moon was a lot of fun.

Warmer at Midnight than I expected - here in California when the sun goes down so does the temperature. Vegas seems to hold it's heat better.

The roads were empty and we had them all to ourselves. They were in amazing good shape too. It was interesting to watch OMC and his lights carving through the turns. Even though there were sweeps galore, I could see him through almost all the turns up ahead of me, like watching a video game. Basically two  pools of light flowing through the darkness of the desert.

As OMC mention the moon wasn't quite full and spent a lot of time dodging in and out of high broken clouds. I must say, I expected ye ol' moon to add more passive light to the ride than it did. Lake Mead was a black inky void (more blac and more inky than the desert) and the moon was so overhead it left no reflection skimming across the waters.

The Fed roadway was all new and super smooth and lined with prodigious amounts of reflective doodads to line the way (and way not) - it contributed to the video game effect. The State roadway of Valley of Fire was a little older, a little rougher and didn't have a glowing path of sparklies to lead the way. In some ways that made it better (and some not).

Rabbitville was firmly contained within the State's Valley of Fire - the state must offer much better entitlements for bunny's.  Many bunny families showed up to watch the motorcycle races and I think bunches of the teen rabbits were proving their malehood by playing chicken with the Connies. I saw one try to jump onto OMC's pillion seat.

I'm not a good napper. Just a bunch of tossing and turning and deep sighs. Like OMC I was starting to get punchy and lazy so it was good when he stopped and said let's call it. Good safe move on his part.

I had a ton of fun and a huge thanks to Mark for setting it up and leading the way through the darkness.

I'll do a ride report on my entire trip, getting there, Barking at the Moon and then home a little later.

and Gumby, only cause you asked, here's some photos (and 1 video). Just couldn't really pull them off with the equipment and attitude available (to lazy to dig out the tripod and set it up, ever) But here you go

The start, overlooking Vegas from the hill - you can see the Luxor light beam for reference - (shutter speed to slow to handhold, photographer to lazy to get out tripod, on camera flash inadequate to light motorcycles at distance selected)

Same. Different angle.

The Marina with Lake Mead in the background, somewhere - (shutter speed to slow to handhold, photographer to lazy to get out tripod, on camera flash inadequate to light motorcycles at distance selected)

Same. Except tried the smartphone camera

Fair enough.  I picked the 9PM timeframe because I personally can handle the heat better than the tired.  See attached, from 2013  ;D
