cutting board

Monday afternoon I went to put some purchases in My JCW trunk and found that it was only hanging by two bolts. My cutting board mount had broken just aft of the back bolts that atached it to the stock bracket on the connie. I had mounted the trunk directly by drilling 4 holes in it and the cutting board and using bolts. The front two bolts were still holding the trunk and the back two were holding the cutting board together. Any suggestions on how to improve this mounting system? 1990 Aint she a pretty Tomato (the bike ofcourse) wedshots albums http://community.webshots.com/user/sawfiler64/albums/most-recent

I saw a double board system that someone had posted where they made the mount for the trunk on one board, the mount to replace the luggage rack out of the second, then bolted the two together. Also, the Givi mount will work if you want to spring for it. I've actually been thinking about this a lot lately, I'd like to replace the current mount though I have to admit, it's gone through a LOT and is still in good shape for me. Wonder what happened that caused yours to break? I've even closed the garage door on my trunk a couple of times and I can still move the whole bike side to side with my trunk's handle.

I think part of the problem is that I bolted the JCW to the board without using the mounting hardware that came with the trunk. Maybe vibration. I don't put much in it as far as weight goes. I do store my helmet and gloves in it while at work. But normally while riding it will just have some lunch stuff. You know, a 6 pack, 4 sandwiches, 2 packs of twinkies, bag of chips. all light stuff. ;) 1990 Aint she a pretty Tomato (the bike ofcourse) wedshots albums http://community.webshots.com/user/sawfiler64/albums/most-recent

Not to be the jerk, but as far as I am concerned cutting boards are designed for the kitchen. I think in the long run you will be better off buying a GIVI unit that is specifically designed for the bike and not the kitchen. AKA "2linby" That's 2-lin-by folks! I personally made an alluminum plate to bolt my JCW mount to. It ain't gonna break.

I guess I missed this point with the topic heading, not realizing it was a kitchen cutting board. Wooden cutting boards are generally made up of glued laminated strips of wood. The joints are structural weak points and the glue may not hold up when exposed to outdoor weather. -- Steve Smith, #3184 COG Northeast Area Director (somewhere in south central CT) If you're not living on the edge, you're taking up too much space.

What material was the cutting board made of? If it was wood, can you change the direction of the grain? Ducati-The thinking mans V-Twin

Murph has the Shad trunks... I have one and really love it. The mount it solid as hell. But that's not the topic so I won't go off on a "you should bought..." tangent. Could you buy the mount for the Shad or a Givi and drill it to hold the JCW trunk? Ducati-The thinking mans V-Twin

Except the cutting board mentioned is a plastic one.
ok - I did not see that. IIRC, the Givi mounting plate is designed to have what I can best describe as honeycomb ribs on the underside. These act as many I-beams that provide strength and rigidity to the mounting plate. Doubling up on the plastic cutting board can help, but using taller vertical supports will offer more strength. -- Steve Smith, #3184 COG Northeast Area Director (somewhere in south central CT) If you're not living on the edge, you're taking up too much space.

Another cutting board user here. The metal plate for the JCW trunk will provide some rigidity and distribute the stress. I also used the cross braces that came with the trunk as supports under the cutting board. Changes are planned in my mount, mainly to include my helmet locks. ..dz.. 2003 Concours 1983 Honda Silverwing 2008 Yamaha Majesty (new) 2003 Honda XR70 (son's)

I did the dual cutting board mount for my JCW trunk. I noticed several months down the road that the boards were sagging so I replaced them with two pieces of aluminum tubing. I wanted the trunk moved a little further back. 06 Concours Vancouver, BC

Thanks for all the replys. Yes it is plastic. Bought another one a little thicker this time. Will probably go to aluminum soon though. 1990 Aint she a pretty Tomato (the bike ofcourse) wedshots albums http://community.webshots.com/user/sawfiler64/albums/most-recent

I did the double cutting board method (Target has them) and followed the instructions listed in this pdf: http://members.rennlist.com/jptl/Rack%20Procedure.pdf It works well and looks good. Pay attention to all measurements and it will go together smoothly and securely, not to mention frugally! I added spacer washers on the back between the 2 cutting boards and the base of the bike to progressively raise the rear angle of the top box so it doesn't look like it is falling off the back of the bike. You can e-mail me if you want me to send pictures of my '06 with the JCW bag.

+1 on Chris. I also secured it to the bike with some small steel cable to the antlers as I have heard of them falling off. Respectfully Yours! Wess Heavner COG #8010 CDA #0239

I mounted some blind 1/4-20 T-nuts underneath the cutting board and run some 1/4-20 bolts thru the trunk and mounting plate to secure it. ..dz.. 2003 Concours 1983 Honda Silverwing 2008 Yamaha Majesty (new) 2003 Honda XR70 (son's)

On this subject, I was looking at the OtP pics yesterday and saw a great big squared off trunk on a couple of the bikes. Does anybody know what trunk that is?
