Mother's Day Run

Finally took off from work, two days, Monday and Tuesday this week, to go visit mom for m.day. Couldn't go on Sunday. But, the weather was going to be much better for Monday and Tuesday anyway. Left the northern berbs of Atlanta around 0915, heading due south via GA400, I85/75 to just south of Atlanta where I got off of 85 and went over to P'Tree City area. Once off of 85 the traffic was nil. Then, I got on old 85 heading south to Sonoia (sp)and points south to Manchester/Warm Springs and then on down to Columbus, GA. All the roads were almost DAP - dead ass perfect two lanes! Weather was DAP, traffic was NIL! I just cruised around 60 mph taking in all the sights. If you have not travelled the back roads of GA they will surprise you. Every few miles there's a little junction and it's not on the map. Some of these places you can still see signs of the 19th century. Some of the people look like they came from the 19th century but that's ok. My '99 just cruised effortlessly (later calculated 49mpg)the nice whining turbine sound I love to hear, a nice constant reminder of the quality & dependable aged technology of my machine. Sort of akin to an old F4 or maybe F86 for us airplane liking old guys. I think of the Connie as an "old workhorse" sure to get the job done if the basics of oil, valves and tires have been taken care of. One disadvantage of traveling back roads of GA - no cell coverage, for me that is. I've got T-Mobile and once I left the I85/P'Tree City area, no signal in the country! About 12 miles from Columbus, GA I got a signal. But, on the way into Columbus, stop in Warm Springs and the place is dead. I've been there on weekends and it is packed with tourist. Monday it was dead. No coffee to be found! Stretched, walk around and broused at the discounted "made in China" stuff and then "back in the saddle" again. Warm Springs was Roosevelt's home away from home and it always amazes me that polio was such a big problem up until the late 1950s. I remember, probably in 1961, being innoculated with the sugar cube with the pink vaccine against polio. I've ridden some of the other roads around Warm Springs and you can almost feel the spirit of the past polio residents in the air. I spent a nice day and evening with my mother and sister and Tuesday morning, get up, load up checking my bike over carefully 'cause it was in a parking lot of my mother's apt complex. My baby is spoiled with its own garage back home. Everything checks out and I go to meet the "tanker" and fill up for my return trip. My return is via the western side of Atlanta. First I head up to one of my favorite areas - Pine Mountain, then over to Moreland and then Newnan, GA. I head up 29 northbound and then 92 to Douglasville, GA. Eat lunch at McD's. 92 during the middle of the day is not a good choice - too many lights. Finally got up to 120 and then headed to Marietta, GA, and tons of lights, again, and finally into Roswell and my home of Alpharetta, GA. 320 miles total and my butt hurts! Got to get a better seat. :) Ride Safe & ATGATT
