No, that is NOT a typo: 15 MONTHS, NOT YEARS. The story in my local paper says that Justin Lindsay, currently 23, of Lumberton, NC, struck and killed Charles Mechling, 54, who was travelling in the same direction, at about 9 PM on that August evening. The victim was riding his 97 HD solo on four-lane, divided SC Highway 9 between N Myrtle Beach and Loris. Lindsay then fled the scene. No witnesses came forward.
From the other two stories about the crash, it seems the perp was apprehended fairly quickly, but there is no mention of him turning himself in. There is also no mention of his possible reasons for running or any reason why he was shown such leniency. The charge only carries a max 25 year sentence anyway, which is ridiculous. I can't conceive of an excuse for leaving someone to die after you just ran him off the road (I may be reaching there, but that's what it sounds like). The sentence was left to the judge's discretion. I guess he was pretty discreet. Oh, yes, also no comments from the victim's family about the sentence.
I called the reporter but haven't reached her. Will post more on this story if I learn more.
