Now I am not saying I am even REMOTELY interested in going through all the hassle of organizing a rally, but..... Several COGers have mentioned to me their fondness for Ennis, MT, and the desire to have another R&P Rally. So, without making even a hint at a commitment, what kind of interest is out there? A: If I put on another R&P Rally in Ennis, MT, at the Sportsman's Lodge for next year (2009) would you be interested in attending? B: If so, please list three times in order of preference (ex: Early September, mid-July, anytime in June, etc) The Original Rich Reed COG #7 1986 Kawasaki Ninja 1000R 1977 Yamaha XS650 Standard 2004 Little Blue Chevy "Over the hill it's five bucks. Ooh, ooh... I'm in! :) Late Jun, Early July early Sept. But you know best what to expect for weather in that area Rich. Somehow, Jordan Krusoff must have known the C14 was coming when he said, "See gas, buy it"

Just goes to show ya. Gas prices can skyrocket, the bottom can drop out of the real estate market, and the weather in the Midwest just turn to crap, but.... ......YOU CAN ALWAYS COUNT ON PAVLIS! I'll have to practice flat tracking the C14. ;) I love the R&P. Great location, great people, and you never know what you're going to encounter. Somehow, Jordan Krusoff must have known the C14 was coming when he said, "See gas, buy it"

Rich, Give me a moment to discuss this with you as I have several idea's bouncing about. AKA "2linby" That's 2-lin-by folks! Northwest Area Director COG #5539 AMA #927779 IBA #15034 Team Oregon MC Instructor

Count me in Rich. I guess it would depend on when next years national is. Can I make that call after the banquet next week? Whenever possible, I like to hit two or more rallies at a time.

Rich, Just asking to make a post, and I don't know any COG history, and (except for the Bun Cooler) have no rally experience. What's an "R & P Rally" and why is it popular? And, where is Ennis, Mt. (yes, I can mapquest it) but what's special about it? Just asking cause there seems to be some interesting history here, and I'm curious. :) Thanks -

I'm not Rich, (Or even "rich", for that matter), but I know the answer. The R&P is in refrence to the way Montana used to have their speed limits posted. During daytime hours it was "Reasonable and Prudent", thus R&P. Ennis is a way cool little town that caters mostly to sportsmen that come to the area to hunt and fish. The Sportsmen Lodge is where we usually stay and has log cabins surrounding a central lodge-type building. The roads are mostly high-speed sweepers, not a lot of tight hair-pins. However, since it is a *hunting* and fishing area, deer are everywhere, so you gotta stay on your toes. I've been to all three that were put on and I recon I'll be there again when/if it happens again. Hope this helps.

Rich, A Definitely. B. Yeah, any of those times are good. Maybe early September as I haven't been there that time of year? C. The clincher: I still have a wooden token: GOOD FOR ONE DRINK at the Sportsman's Lodge. Sure, I'll ride 4300 miles to redeem it with friends. :) Pat Pat COG 1887 IBA 5830 "Dulcinea" A13 KLR 650 "Betsy" K7 DL650 "Tri-X" DR 350SEX "Pogo" '06 Ruckus "Track Machine" '04 R6 "Grey Ghost" '07 EX 250

Nebraska Jerry's post pretty much covers it, but I'll add a little. On the way back from the COG National in Eureka Springs, ARK, the late Jordan Krusoff and I were seeking a place to spend the last night on the road after having survived the destruction zones and spastic tourists of Yellowstone. The criteria was a Cheap 'n' Clean motel where we could park the bikes at the door (i.e. no stairs, visual contact, etc), and either an on-site or next-door eatery with a liquor license. The first town of any size we came to was Ennis, and there stood the Sportsmans Lodge. Perfect. While sitting there eating our steaks and sipping our cold drafts, Jordan and I both realized this was a perfect site for a COG rally. The price was very reasonable, the staff friendly and accommodating, the cabins afforded both privacy and the opportunity to share expenses (2 rooms, one bath), motel rooms for people who didn't want to share, tent sites for the frugal, and best of all, once the riding was done for the day, you could park your bike at your room and saunter (saunter, mind you, not walk, but saunter) over to the bar or restaurant to join up with kindred spirits, embellish Factual Motorcycling Anecdotes (tm), and imbibe on Adult Beverages. And watch Pavlis demonstrate dirt track techniques in the parking lot. The town of Ennis is in beatiful country, with some neat roads and scenery nearby, including the aforementioned Yellowstone. The Beartooth is a day ride, but the road over to Virginia City, Big Hole Country or through Eathquake Canyon is mighty nice. Jerry noted the area doesn't have tight turns, and that's OK. There are plenty of venues on the COG calendar that will make the most ardent peg-scraper grin; this rally is intended as a stop on a long-term tour, with fun roads, great scenery and a comfy, funky rally HQ where they roll a keg out on the lawn for happy hour and cook great ribs over a real charcoal fire. So, anyway, way back then I decided to run a NW Regional at the site, and because at the time the Montana speed limit was Reasonable and Prudent, I decided to call the rally just that. In fact, the first two R&P's, the rally t-shirt depicted Larry Leaner superimposed over the Montana speed limit sign. A tradition was started with the back of the shirt, a listing of (in)famous places, names, and sayings that mean something to a NW COger (and many COGers from other areas). With complete disregard to modesty, I have been lead to believe having one's name or saying posted to the back of the R&P shirt is a status symbol, akin to "being made." Even after Montana repealed their speed limit, we decided to keep the name as a tribute to the people of Montana and to their way of thinking. The first rally blew me away. It was a lot of work, but we had so much fun. It was a great mix of people, and to my surprise at least half the attendees came from outside the NW Area. The SW sent a lot of folk, and there were COGers from as far away as Nebraska, Pennsyltucky (Jerry and Pat have already chimed in) New York, and even a crew from Alabama. The staff of the Sportsmans Lodge were tickled pink to have us, and even made a banner for us. Today that banner is one of my most prized souvenirs. I think also that one of the biggest attractions to the R&P and to Ennis is that it is such a hoot to get to. Not many COGers actually live in the area, so for most attendees planning the routes to and from are half the fun. For some reason, the R&P's just seem to have that magic combination of people, riding, weather, locale, and accommodations. So, that's it in a nutshell. Still don't know if I want to do this again, but I sure would like to Get Back To Ennis. Thanks Rich (and Jerry from Ne.) for that great description and a bit of COG history. BTW - I've heard rumors, since I live in Wa. but haven't traveled across Mt. in a long time... Does anyone know their current speed limit policies? Maybe it varies from county to county... just wondering what the Mt. state laws are now?? And lastly, thanks again Rich (as I thanked you in Kamiah) for meeting me a year and a half ago at the Woodinville m/c dealer to look at that '02. Bob P. had sent out a request for me... and you and Fred showed up. This is a great group, and the help you all give out to the inexperienced (like me) is awesome!! Thanks again :)

Rich The CFO and I are in :) Sounds great. {Edit}I would go for early Sept. Colin Prior Cogmos Committee Chairman Lake Forest Park WA COG#7767

Montana now has a posted speed limit. It is multi-tiered, one for cars, a lower one for trucks, and due to the Bamn Dambies, everyone has to haul it down at night. GENERALLY, interstates are 75 (maybe 80 in spots), US highways and primo state roads are 65, with occasional 70, normal "blue highways" are 60, and nasty little buggers are 50. I do not know what the current consequences are for being nabbed. I did get nailed about 9 years ago, after the R&P limit was repealed, in a rental car north of Glasgow while out there supporting a Boeing flight test (Boeing owns an old SAC base north of Glasgow where they can do Splats 'n' Scats all day long without pesky FAA intervention and bug smashers getting in the way). The cop wrote me the ticket, I handed him a fiver, and we departed friends. What was cool was at the time my company was partnered with a German firm in developing this new whiz-bang system that we were testing, and with me in the car at the time were two German nationals. They were both horrified when I took out my wallet and gave the cop the $5 bill, and thought they were going to jail for bribing a cop. After I explained that this was normal in Montana only as they treat speeding as a waste of natural resources, one of the Germans, a Beemer rider when back in Europe, got an evil grin on his face. I do know that once you depart the realm of stupidity (i.e. 20 or so over) then you get nailed with a real ticket or, if the cop deems you were really stupid, even jail time. I do not know if the "wasting natural resources" fine is still in effect. What sayeth our Big Sky Brethren?
