Sanity Ride

I took a "Sanity Ride" on Saturday. By the time I got moving, it was 2pm so I didn't have much time. It gets dark here at 5pm.

I headed north to Lake Cavanaugh, taking a back route through Granite Falls.

It was a nice road. Lots of twists and turns. The leaves were past their prime, but still colourfull.

Sanity reboot is not working, you are still on a BMW. LOL! just busting your chops. I have ridden by Lake McMurray a dozen times, (always hum the theme from My Three Sons), but have never heard of or been to Lake Cavanaugh. I have relatives in Granite Falls...may have to check this out, thanks for sharing!

If you want someone to ride with, I'll join you. Since I'm on a BMW, I'll follow far enough back that hopefully, you won't get any negativity cast in your direction. ;)

How do you like the Hippo Hands?
I bought those years ago while commuting to the south end of Seattle each day. I found that as long as you buy "hippo hands" that don't say "motorcycle", they aren't expensive. As soon as that one word is added to the packaging, the cost triples. Those actually are for an ATV and were branded from Duck's Unlimited. The cost was $25. So if you are looking to do this, look also at handlebar muffs for ATVs and snowmobiles too.

They work well, but the secret is cutting off any air flowing into the muffs. When I first put them on the original bike, there was a lot of air flowing in them. I stuffed the opening with some rags and used duct tape to seal them off and then they did super.

It doesn't take me long to learn how to slip my hand in while riding. But you do have to accept that you'll have to learn that muscle memory so you can do it without looking.

I also found the air pressure on the outside had a tendency to push them back against the clutch and brake lever. I made an "L" shaped bracket out of scrap that I had laying around and used the screw on the end of the handlebar weights to hold the bracket in place. It sounds tacky, but you can't see the bracket from the outside.

Bottom line...if you are riding in cold wet weather, they may look un-cool...but you'll be smiling while you're riding. :)
