SC Routes to the 2014 COG National

I think it's about time for a "SC Routes to the 2014 COG National" thread.

(Please, OH Please,  don't let there be a thread for this already in existence that I missed  :-[ ::) it'll make me feel stupid. Again. )

So what have you got? Post 'em here.

I'm thinking of slabbing most of the way to a motel in Fayetteville TN. on Saturday and then taking a more interesting route into JC on Sunday. I don't know
the area so I'm just looking at squiggly lines on the map and occasionally looking at the Google street view to make choices. I'd like to hear see what others have
in mind (that aren't trailering, no negative inference meant, I learned my lesson and I don't do that anymore.)

This is what I have so far: http://goo.gl/maps/x7yxi

you dont want to take Talimena Pkwy into AR?

I was going to save that for the Jack's run in October.

However if you can tie it in to a two day run to JC I'd love to see the route. Maybe use it, maybe hit it on the way home.

You could take TN 203 from Savannah to Waynesboro and follow 99.  Reid showed us that route this past Sept at the rally at Hohenwald.

Traffic on I-24 in Chattanooga gets backed up a lot it seems.  We found a nice detour we've used to get around some of the congestion.  Scenic, low-traffic kind of ride.

If you're looking for an interesting road and a way around the I-24 traffic, try this one.

Houston (I-10) to Mississippi, Turn Northeast,,,, and stop at JC.
Unfortunately, To many ^%$$ highways, but the quickest/most direct route from Houston.

Ride safe, Ted

Thanks wipfel! If I understand you, the second link you posted is the one that I should avoid. Correct?

See if this looks better to you. http://goo.gl/maps/Qz1n6

..and then the other route ("follow 99") would be something like this?: http://goo.gl/maps/x3PO5 That might be a nice return to home route.

The southern route is starting to get long for a 2 day run (by my standards), the advantage of a GPS is that I can always abandon
a stored route and just let it plot the quickest route to get me there sooner. Then again I guess I could leave on Thursday and spend some time
in the Smokies before the National. Decisions decisions.

I've rode a whole lot of miles. My wife likes to trailer,, which means,  I do to.

So,,,,  If'n ya PROMISE YA WON'T pick on me,,,,   I'll reply with;

I have done my share of riding the bike.  Over 200k in about 8 years.  Over 830 in a day more then once.  If I want my SO to be happy though I trailer.  I have learned not to hate doing the 500 miles out of Texas when it is 100+.

Because I have a trailer I can/will bring a small BBQ Pit to the National to cook Jalopenia Poppers....
Don't pick on me and you can have some of them things too.
      Fair e'nuff?
PS: If'n we can get Bob's SO to make more of her Jalopenia Poppers, (hint/hint) and I build some of mine,,,
we can share some Jalopenia's with the OtP Travelers.

Hmmm, not many route responses. OK, so maybe I'm the only one that's planning this far out.

How about this then. Since the rafting and the advanced rider course will take up 2 of my days of the 5 day event, that leaves only 3 days for riding in an area known for many fine roads.
I'm thinking that I'm going to want at least 2, maybe 3 more days stay in the area. Perhaps 2 for riding and one for just exploring Smokey Mountain NP.
Should I just stay in JC or move to another location? (don't say Gatlinburg, that's not happening. It was tourist hell the last time I was there in the '60s, I can only imagine what it's like now.)  What is the absolute top 10 roads/areas/things to see while I'm there?
Anybody else staying longer?  Speak freely, as I promise that I won't ask to tag along. I'm just curious as to what others have planned so that I don't miss anything while I'm in the area.

Thanks.

Actually, both of those routes are for avoiding traffic and either would be an ok choice.  That second one over Lookout Mountain is a bit more fun.  Some tight turns and more fun roads.  The first one is just a good detour if traffic gets backed up in that area just before you start getting into Chattanooga, which seems like 2/3 times I go down that way.  A couple of summers ago a friend and I got stuck in an 11 mile backup in 90 degree heat coming back through Chattanooga to Nashville from the dragon.  We ended up going over Lookout Mountain (unintentionally) as a desperate detour and had that awesome experience that we all have when we find a good road unexpectedly.

I think you'll really like that route. Definitely beats the interstate and the country b/w I-65 and Chattanooga is mostly really nice.

I'm jumping on tis thread, well, 'cuase I can and to give Ted greif. I plan on crossing the TX Panhandle Friday into Sat. After that I'm wide open to be in to TN on Sun so iffen anybody has any suggestions I'm listenin'. Plus I want some of those stuffed peepers.

We'll be leaving Houston on Thursday (June 12). Liesurely travel on I-10 to Mississippi. (Might swing by Pensacola and do the Air Museum) Then turn Northeast and work our way to Sweetwater Tenn. (to do the Cherohala) on Sat.
Then shoot up to Johnson City on Sunday Morning.

Gonna bring Jalopenia's from Texas (mebbe 100) because,,,,  "as everyone knows",, Texas Jalopenia's taste best!

Let the FLAMES Begin!    >:D
Have Poppers, will Travel!

Ride safe, Ted

No it isn't, they can be enjoyed equally (better IMO) with Margaritas.  :)

And if anyone doesn't like beer or margaritas I will have some Franzia box wine.

Actually, Properly prepared Poppers,,,,  are NOT hot..    ;)
                Trust me...    :)

                        :sign0103:

But, just in case,,, I'll have some Ice Cold "Corn"........... squeezin's..........
  Legally purchased (of course...)

Oh I'm not worried about them being hot, the adult beverages are just to kill any germs I might have picked up from the trip out there.
