Taking the Lake Express ferry across Lake Michigan today to ride the western shore up to Marquette, MI. Gorgeous day for the high speed trek across the lake. I will post more as I go during this ride.

Thanks Wayne, Carol and Blue. Passed 2 Connie’s on my way; a C14 and a C10.Seeing the title I didn’t know where this was going at first!
I hear that ferry route cuts out a good amount of miles and headache. Have fun.

The ride could not be more scenic. So glad you were able to enjoy it. I now realize that a 400 mile day is a bit much for this aging body. New rides are going to be based on NMT 275 miles per leg.Loved crossing that bridge!!! Buddy and i did the lake michigan loop about 5 years ago. Went counter clockwise from chicago. Stayed at st ignace koa. Took the ride up to the shipwreck museum and tahqumenon falls state park... beuatiful day..
Our ride back south the next day was wet from the koa all the way to kenosha, my daughter the college soccer star had a home game ...did t even have to take off our rain gear. All in all a great trip, that bridge is amazing...!!
The grating is still there. It is needed for airflow so the bridge does not develop the deadly waves that took the one down in Washington state so many years ago.I went over that bridge in 2003 when it had steel grating on the inside lanes? Not sure if they paved them over but it was quite the adventure looking down through the grating at the water below, WAAAAY below trying to negotiate the wandering of the tires, glad it was a dry sunny day.
The lake can be unpredictable for sure. Glad you had the flexibility and ended up having a great ride! I just wandered the west shore today and ended up in Ludington. Bright blue sunny skies and 80 degrees with a light breeze. Miss Tourmaline was running so smoothly eating up the curves. My short ride ended up as a 6 hour trek.Looks like a great trip Rob.
Did the loop around lake Michigan in 2013. I had planned to go counter clockwise around the lake and had a reservation/prepaid for the 6AM ferry out of Milwaukee. I left Chicago (staying with family) early and got there at 5:30AM expecting to see a line. Only a few cars in the lot and no line. I go inside and they say the ferry isn't running right now because of large waves on the eastern end, and I could get a refund or wait for the next one, or the one after that, maybe, kind iffy..... . I asked them to move my reservation to tomorrow afternoon going east to west out of Muskegon and changed my route around the lake from counter clockwise to clockwise and left. It all worked out very well and I had a nice trip. Even though the ferry was full of metric cars, mine was the only metric bike. The others loved the echo chamber effect of the ferry when it came time to drive off which made their already un-muffled exhaust even more annoying.
