A frugal rear shock?

I will admit I haven't did a "search" but I'm just wondering if anyone has a frugal suggestion on a rear shock. 1.) Has there been any success in just changing to 15W oil? 2.) Has there been any success with #1 and a spring rate change? 3.) What have been the frugally successful shock replacements one has used? 4.) Oh what the heck with frugal what has been the most successful rear shock replacement? This is in regards to the group Intmidators purchase as I have bought a pair of these for my C10 (and 650 V-Strom) so I'm looking for a refined non jarring ride for the Connie so I'm thinking some work to the rear shock or a new shock will be in order to go along with the work on the forks. So what say yea oh knowledgeable ones??
 
1. Plenty of success just changing to 15w oil 2. The frugal shock is the ZZR1200 rear shock 3. More expensive but not too outrageous, is getting a Progressive from Murph 4. I also posted this on the other forum and came up with purchasing a ZG1400 shock on eBay for $149 plus shipping.. Go Pinwall!! This appears to fit my frugal budget and between the ZZR1200 shock ($249 plus shipping "but it was new") this was cheaper. OOPSIE! More frugal :) Oh and by the way.. Thanks for your reply.
 
Does the ZG1400 shock fit? What kinda tricks are needed to get that installed. Thats a nice option. And a little newer date. Probably oriented to hauling more weight than the ZZR too. 2003 Concours, 56K COG #6953 IBA 28004 http://home.comcast.net/~slybones/Concours/connieMain.htm
