Best Radar Detector

Hey Coggers,

My Escort Solo 2 radar detector crapped out and I'm in the hunt for a replacement.  I liked the Solo 2 because it's battery operated, portable, has an earphone jack, and can be placed out of sight in my tank bag.  I don't like the idea of having a detector out in plain site because in the event I ever get pulled over it seems that the detector would provoke a lack of mercy in the LEO's mind.  While having a hidden detector with an earphone jack worked ok, it was a bit of a nuisance to have to jack in and out all the time.  I've heard of detectors that have a red warning light mounted in the helmet that receives a wireless transmission from the unit so that the earphones wouldn't be necessary.  But I haven't found such a unit.

How about it?  Any of you know of a detector that meets my criteria?

Portable
Can be run inside a tank bag
Helmet mounted warning light  (optional, I can live with earphone jack/wire.
And of course, it needs to be effective against as many speed detection technologies as possible.

Yes, I know I could just get a Solo 3, but I'm looking for better alternatives.

Thanks for your suggestions.

You may be thinking of the H.A.R.D. system http://www.legalspeeding.com/products.htm#components

The web site says they are redesigning it at this time.

I use a an Escort 8500X50,  with audio alert fed thru my Autocom system.  I have heard in the past that the visual systems are a little bit slower responding than audio. Maybe that will be different with the new system.

Just think to yourself.....if I was a cop who wanted to catch a speeder where would I sit.  Just past a bend in the road, on the other side of a hill crest or at the bottom of a hill.  They could sit pretty much anywhere this is just food for thought guys.  Ride safe out there!

dysldu ,

I can tell you that the radar detector of choice for riders in the long-distance (e.g. IronButt) community is the Valentine V1. There are a number of reasons, but formost is that this is the only detector on the market to use TWO antennae...one forward-facing, one rearward-facing. My understanding is that there are a number of accessories that also allow it to be mounted inconspicuously on a motorcycle.

That said, there are others that are suposedly very good as well....Escort 9500 and Bel STi are apparently as good as, if not better than, the Valentine in all respects other than the dual antennae. The Bel STi series also have the advantage of being undetectable.

HTH,

I always thought that the best radar detector on the market was the guy in front of you ;)

I went through over a dozen speed traps on my latest road trip. In every case it was the brake lights for no apparent reason that tipped me off. Nearly every cop was using laser.

That has always proven to be the best method for me, thats why I don't mind riding the back door

It works if there's traffic, there's been two occasions in my life when there wasn't anyone out there to brake.
