coolant pump rebuild

My '91 w/87,000 mi on the clock has sprung a leak from the weep hole on the bottom of the pump. Checked it while running and just getting warmed up, it was dripping very fast. Pulled it apart and now need to know - has anyone successfully rebuilt the pump? If so, how and where did you get the o-ring that will be needed to seal the pump shaft? Service manual says if it leaking from the weep hole, to replace the pump. New pump is $165 from Ron Ayers. I don't even want to ask the local dealer what his price is. TIA

Murph has them as well but I don't have a current price. I have a metric o-ring set from Harbor Freight, and it has about 30 sizes, and I paid 7 bucks for it. You would need a new bearing and seal also - most just get the new water pump and put it in. Don't forget to bleed it thought. If it is leaking oil the fix is easy. If it is leaking coolant the fix is replacement. The seal is all but impossible to replace, even if it is available. Rob Matson tried to press out the shaft and had to apply something like 10K presure to get it to move. Murph carries the pump cheaper than Ayers I beleive . Also replace the hoses and clamps while you are at it. AKA "2linby" That's 2-lin-by folks! By way of follow up to Bob's excellent advice... If it is the oil seal (its not an o-ring) you can get them from Ma K. or from Ron Ayres http://www.ronayers.com/ Colin Prior COG IT Director Lake Forest Park WA COG#7767 AMA#1081764 ROK#20000617

Thanks for the input. Ordered a new replacement from Ron Ayers. I needed a couple of other items as well, so just got them all at once.

After the 4 Pass Blast with Roland with a oil leak at the water pump a couple weeks ago... Last Fri got started late @ 10PM and as I am a slow wrench finished replacing the water pump (new from Murhps) at midnite with fresh coolant and system burped. Rode with the Olympia Rat group next day Sat. Frost on the pumpkin leaving home @ 9AM. Nice ride with Gerbings heated gear. Look ma, no leaks!
