I am a Newbie to the forum...been lurking a few weeks soaking up the experience here.... great forum you have here. Have had my eye on a Concours for a couple of years and have located a new 2010 still on the floor. I have been running bikes for over 30 years and have a few old Nortons and a Heritage that I currently run and wrench on. Looking for a bit of input on mimimum farkle requirement right off the hop. I plan on using the bike more for distance running than spinning around town...will continue to use the older bikes for that.

I can tell just by feeling the stock seat that it won't cut it for my 230 lbs so something has to change there...however not sure which direction to go and can't justify the coin to experiment with several aftermarket seats....the corbin looks good and has a good rep. but I keep hearing its a little stiff. Leaning in the direction of a Sargent but still not convinced so with that said here is my list of immediate to-do's when I buy the bike.

1) Alaska sheepskin butt pads for rider and passenger (till a seat decision gets made) have the riders one in hand on one of the other bikes
2) Fender extender / rad gaurd.....do I need both....or will the extension provide enough protection for the rad AND reduce the road grime
3) Peg extension kits and new pegs....I am 6' 2" so need to make space for the legs and the stock pegs look like junk for distance riding.
4) Luggage rack  Phil's seems to be the best choice (see number 5)
5) Top case  not sure here either...Shad, Givi or the Kawi case....might end up being a decision based on dollars although I wouldn't get a lower quality case just to save $100. In my case I can't get my hands on them to check them out...have to order just looking at pics and reading reviews...I prefer to buy stuff that I can get my hands on but there it is.
6) a couple of mounts...perhaps the fluid reservoir type for GPS...etc.

Things that a 6' 3" 270 pounder has on his and likes. Corbin seat, it is stiff and slippery after rubbing it down with their saddle cream and about 1" lower than stock, however I do like it as I really don't want my seat to be mushy either...Could not imagine riding the bike without the 2" handle bar risers. I am considering adding wedges to get another 1" out of them....1" lower pegs,they just make up for the 1" lower seat.......You won't be disappointed with Phils rack,you will be disappointed if you buy the kawasaki top case becuase it come with it's own mounting plate that bolts on to Phils nice rack.....Vstream windshield,I can lower it and take some air or raise it and be completley out of the wind.....Made my own rad protector for now. Trimmed and cut 1/4" wire mesh to fit and zip tied it in,can't even notice unless your looking....just put headlight modulator on the front and hyper lites in the rear as this bike can be invisible from the rear. The stock tail light is pretty sad. Should be putting a front fender extender on tonight if it shows up today. Have fun!!
 
NEW TIRES out the door - either Angel STs or PR3s.  Running a 29-30 inch inseam and just as fat (maybe more).  Settled on the Corbin but bought used, heated if you ride under 40F.  I have beads and airhawk if needed.  Have not changed the pegs and don't intend to.  2 inch risers.  Taller windscreen - taller than the '10-'11 version (I bought an Ultra Tour used).  Radar detector (I bought Escort 9500ix new) and the flashy light thing for it.  Radiator guard (still haven't installed the fender extender I bought a year ago).  Hugger.  I would wait on the rack/topcase and fender extender/hugger until you have the seat / windscreen / tires situation figured out unless you plan on touring right away.

Get the bike, work out the rest when you're not busy riding. :sign0081:

I should have mentioned I am buying the bike down in Kentucky and running it about 2200 miles ( 3500 km) back up to eastern Canada.

Love the 1/4" mesh rad protector idea and the heads up on the tires...didn't think to question the quality of the stock rubber.

The more feedback the better...if I am going to do this it has to be before the middle of August.

Unfortunately that is a long way to go on the initial ride. If something gets sore you will have to keep going. There are COG members all up and down the east coast though and someone may be able to help you out with borrowed farkles.

I would suggest at the minimum a good seat cushion if using the stock seat. A lot of people like Alaska Leather (I think ?) sheepskins, and I like and use an Airhawk. Either one, or even both together should extend you riding time.

A throttle lock will also be very handy for long periods of time on the highway.

One other thing you might want to look into is Craig Vetter's 'Magic board'. Simple and cheap, they apparently work very well. I have not used one so no personal knowledge.

Started with safety gizmos to make myself more easily seen
Hyperlites
headlight modulator
Tail Brights (Reflective material on back)
Murph's upgraded headlight bulbs

From there moved to ergos
Bar Risers
Grip Puppies
Different Seats (tried Airhawk, sheepskin etc finally broke down and got a day-long made)
V Stream Windshield
McCruise Cruise Control
Amplirder wired in to mix my audio sources out to earbuds

Then some of the protective goodies
Rad Guard
Oil Filter Guard

Some other stuff I like
Givi Topcase
Tank bag
Pillion Bag

Frame Sliders (To be installed when I get back)


Lastly, GPS and Radar Detector and had keys cut for the bags/tank so I don't have to pull the stove key

I normally would say ride it for a bit before you start making changes. But in your case you may need to take things with you and try them as you go.  The very least would be something to sit on to break up the stocks seat effect. Get it home with as little as you can and still comfortably make the trip home. The 2010 has the larger screen, so you may be OK there for the trip.
 
Ah, Canadian aye? sorry I used 6.35mm mesh to make my rad protector  :-[  Got my front fender extender and headlight armor installed this evening. Don't tell the wife  >:D
 
The 1st thing you should do is replace that ugly ginormous potato launcher TM! :-\  ;D
