Minimum Tool Kit: What to carry?

charley

Tricycle
My 1998 Connie is without a tool kit. I can look at my 1978 Yamaha kit and assemble similar, but I am betting you all have figured out what really will make a save on the road. What are you carrying?

Ya know Charley, you bring up an important topic, and by the grace of God, I havent had any trouble along the way yet, I know its a matter of time. I have a pressure guage, and a tire patch kit, as I figure thats going to happen any time, includes one of those little inflation bottles that puts a minumum amount of air in. Some people I know carry a bicycle tire pump. I screw driver that has all types on it, some lock tite, a front light bulb, 100/80, some gum and I'm good. I probly should carry some wrenches, but dont.

Next time you do any maintenance, whatever tool you use goes in the tool bag. Anything you don't have already (which sounds like everything) goes into it. When you get your kit together, ONLY do maintenance with it. If you find you can't do something with what you have ON the bike, buy it or add it to the kit. What's in mine? Not including spare parts and not a complete list: 8, 10, 12, 14, 17 MM wrenches 4-6-8-10 and 12mm allen wrenches the "correct" 18mm socket for the plugs. Not all 18mm sockets will fit, so you'll be trying a few before you find the right one. mine is http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/items/5MT98 1/4" drive socket set w/ 4, 6, 8, 10, 12mm sockets 1/4"-3/8" adapter 3/8" sockets in 14, 16, 17 and the 18mm above, and whatever size the rear axle nut is. Spanner for the upper steering head nut. Small set of needle nose w/ cutter 6" vice grip Motion Pro tire irons with the socket driver adapter in 3/8" and 1/4" Tire Plug kit with the strings/glue wrapped with cloth and in a separate bag, or a plugging kit with the stud type plugs. Multi-meter, air compressor, wiring schematic or the entire clymer manual, assorted bolts, nuts, fuses, wire, tape, 2 spare plugs, feeler gauges in only the sizes you need for valves and plugs. Bulbs break easily, and can be bought locally, so you really don't need to carry anything other than maybe a headlight. (you'll usually have the other beam, so if you burn your low you can continue with the high) The only bulb I consider carrying, and it's for safety reasons only: Rear Brake light. It's a start. There are full Connie kits on Ebay every now and then (and are priced to sell ;), but you can make a more complete kit at half the price by looking either in your toolbox or yardsales, flea markets or auctions. http://millerized.com/pegs I'll be in the garage

I'll second that statement. You might want to include some other items to help w/ repair of various items on the road such as: emery cloth light grit sandpaper small tube of RTV dielectric grease electrical tape differnet sized zip ties jumper cables (small ones for a motorcycle) quick steel epoxy, tire and tube repair tools small air ocmpressor

a flash light might come in handy, wire nuts for quick temporary repairs, maybe some small jumper wires with alligator clips for testing or bypassing something to get you home or off the road to civilization. i don't remember if anyone said duct tape, that stuff will fix anything!
