NC Outer Banks trip

I'm headed out on a trip the week of September 13th.....probably to explore the NC Outer Banks. Anyone else headed that way that week?
 
I'm headed out on Monday. Planning to stop first in Beaufort, then hop on the ferry over to Ocracoke, then head straight up to Corolla (I think that's as far as I can go on paved roads). Next I'll head back down to Kill Devil Hills, then I'll cut across and head back west towards the mountains of NC. Hopefully the weather will cooperate....can't wait to get to the beach!
 
I would like to see the outer banks some time, especially the 'birthplace of flight', with or without a bike (GF doesn't want to ride). How did your trip work out, (did you get stuck in any hurricanes) and do you have any tips for tourists?
