Hello guys Im new to the Concours 14 as I sold my 07 Duck ST3 and picked up an 08 C14. My question is I just drained the oil and installed a new filter and have not bought the oil yet. I have 6 quarts of Castrol SYNTEC 20/50 from my Porsche and was wondering if I could use it in the bike. Will it have any affect on the clutch etc. Thanks Warren
 
Wes, I would be hesitant to use it but it may be OK. The Syntec 20w50 web site says this is for older engines but your C14 is the latest/greatest thing around. Kaw usually calls for a 10w40 IIRC and this is a heavier grade. Oils for older engines may work though since they probably do not have the "Energy-Conserving" title to them. EC oils have additives that could cause problems with a wet clutch. Lots of COG'ers (including myself) use Shell's Rotella Syn (about $20/gal) with very good success. Ideally you would want to use one with the matching JASO rating found in motorcycle oils. I think Rotella dino and syn both match the one for motorcycles since diesels often have gear-driven blowers. Just opinions here :) 20W/50 is probably too heavy. Also, I can't remember from my Advance Auto days, but I believe the Syntech is 'Energy Conserving' (will say on the API label). Personally I'm not real fond of Energy Conserving oils (they have extra friction modifiers in their additive package) in a wet clutch bike. Asking about oil will garner about 50 million opinions LOL so beware ;)
 
I looked at the bottle and its not energy conserving. I guess I will use it up and then at the next change go with something else. What are some of you guys using and recommend as weights?
 
I use the Mobil 1 4T 10w40. It's made for motorcycles. It cost's a little more. But I have peace of mind. Good stuff! Rotella synthetic is very good, and the petroleum oil is also very good. Some reports say that Rotella Syn is the best thing out there, but of course that would lead to flaming beyond belief. I ran an air-cooled GS1000 Suzuki on Valvoline conventional 10w-40 for years with great results, so there are truly a lot of really fine oils out there. Warren You didn't say if the '08 C14 you bought was new or used.....it makes a difference. If you bought a left over and you're going through the engine break-in period, you should only use the recommended 10W40 oil. If the engine is already broken in, then 20W50 can be used even thought the recommended viscosity is 10W40. Check out pages 162 & 163 of your Owners Manual, 20W50 is allowed, the key is to make sure that the oil you have meets the API type listed on page 162, and you'll be ok. Kevin
 
I bought it used with 1400 miles on it and now have about 2200. So I changed the oil with new Kaw filter and 20/50. I also just got and installed the Area P carbon exhaust, Power Commander V and BMC filter. After removing the flies and I have to say what a world of difference. Very easy and gave me time to never sneeze some bolts. AreaP slip on
