Still No Joy: Starts, won't run right

Well - New vacuum slide installed, but she's still very unhappy. When I start her up, with full choke, she revs to about 5k, then slides down to around 2k after a few seconds, and then sputters and chokes to death, or revs back up to 4-5k and then slides back down, and up, and down... Using the throttle sometimes works, but it takes a while to release the RPM's once I do release the throttle still - which sounds very much like the vacuum slide problem I thought I just fixed... I've messed with the idle screw, and the choke to try to find a position that makes her happy, but there isn't one. If she stays running, it's only to bounce between 2 and 4-5k. If I trim the idle down any further from that point, she goes from 2k to 1k to dead. Any thoughts? [P] (Reposted to a new discussion for visibility)

That's what I was thinking.. Short of taking a rubber hose and doing the stethescope thing to listen for a hissing, does shooting WD-40 or something like that at a hose help for this kind of analysis? [P]

propane torch, UNLIT....passed around each carb boot on the engine side, and along anyplace that could suck air in....you'll notice a change when the leak sucks the propane.... do this outdoors.....of course.
