Trigger Circuit

Where is a good place to tap into a trigger circuit that is hot only when the engine is running? The headlight is off until the engine is running. Is that a good one to use? Does the Murph's headlight wiring kit use the existing circuit to trigger a relay for the new wiring? I've done some wire-following on Rosie and discovered she had some creative previous owners. There were several live hot wires under the fairing that had been used for various accessories over the years. The aux lights were powered by the wire for the clock, through a switch, directly to the lights. I have since changed it to use a relay drawing power directly from the battery and use the existing (clock wire) wiring to trigger the relay. This isn't ideal but it is more sane that what I had.. and it has a fuse now. I know there is a special place in hell for me... as I used a Lucas relay (leftover from MG ownership days) for my lights. Common sense dictates a trip to the auto parts store for something different.
