Trying to make sense of 86 front suspension

Road Bike
OK, a couple of simple questions that may be so simple I have been embarrassed to ask.  First, has anyone installed a fork tube cap with the air valve on the left side fork? I don't know why you can only add air to one fork and is it a waste of time to do it to both? Second, does the 86 have a preload? I see no obvious preload adjustment other than leaving the caps loose. I read about front suspension adjustment and only see air as my adjustment.

I'm sorry if my questions are simple or do not make sense. I'm pretty green with bikes and young and inexperienced in general (31 y.o.) I have been riding snowmobile and ATV my whole life but am finding that the only thing they have in common is the fact they are built for recreation. I am also limited in resources such as knowledgeable people close by and not having much extra money to buy manuals and such which I intend to do as soon as I can. :-[ :-[ :motonoises:
