Vermont Gaps, Waterfalls, Views

Yesterday afternoon we blasted up to northern VT staging ourselves for an awesome day today.

Today we rode at least 6 gaps in VT starting in Waitsfield, VT and winding our way south until we ended up at the summit of Mt. Equinox.

Throughout the day waterfalls, mountains views and twisty roads, some pics below.

Pace 327 miles today and 248 miles yesterday afternoon relatively tame as we brought the Dunlop RSIV’s down to the end of their life, I will not wear beyond the first wear bars - remarkably though we have over 8,100 miles on them!

Note: Many roads on the northern end of this trip have damage and temporary fill replacing washouts; come around a corner and see a sign that says bump - hah - not a bump! The road surface is gone and replace with a temp fill. Still fun, as I mentioned to Carol - adds to the adventure!

Sounds awesome! I was fortunate to spend some time in West-Central NH and it's beautiful all around there. Didn't have my Connie yet and needed to have a car, but still great.

I lived in NH for most of my youth, however never traveled in Vermont much - this state is quite amazing!

Already have the next trip sketched out, and hoping to bust out the GoPro next go-around, I’ve been lazy and have not mounted Blue with the camera.

Also, side note: we were quite surprised to see the number of trees already changing. I think we say that every year though… lol

Vermont is a COGNE favorite. Gotta love the passing on double yellow laws.
How were the frost heaves on RT17 across the App Gap? Last fall the top had a few rough sections, but both approaches up/down were terrific.
Your next trip should include a ride over the Floating Bridge in Brookfield VT

I can see why Vermont is so favored; awesome roads, awesome scenery; awesome people - VT is 3x awesome!

The frost heaves were not bad on 17 there were a couple spots but not bad at all - however - take note about some of the road washouts that still exist, if any of them are not marked or markings go unseen its a bent wheel (at the least) if hit at speed...

Floating Bridge we'll look it up. On our next ride list are some of these passes again with fresh tires, connectors in-between along with Smuggler's Notch and areas ENE of there.

Another note for those that have not experienced this area... As we were climbing some of these gaps I was shocked by the steepness of the grade. In Colorado I recall the steepest tar road mountain passes was around 9.5% - 10%, yeah that is steep however LET ME TELL YOU that now is nothing... The steepest grade we saw in Vermont was a whopping vertical 28%, let me say that again - a grade on one of the passes in Vermont is nearly 3x as steep as the steepest tar pass grade in Colorado! Note above VT is 3x awesome!!! Many other grades were in the teens but wow that one gap climb was intense.

Given the reach to the areas it's either a lot of slabbing up and down (we come from CT) and riding in targeted areas only OR bunk overnight to get more saturation of the area. Note - We usually stay at familiar lodging chains but YIKES they were either all booked up or wanted $350 or MORE per night... We found several lodges in the area of HWY 17 that looked great and were less than half the price. We stayed at Whitehorse Lodge and would highly recommend them for a small group - Dana the owner greeted us with fresh homemade cookies and man they were good. Accommodations were equal or in many cases better than our usual chain hotels, we may go this route more often. Also, I enjoy the personal connections made as well - that is a big part of the journey.

We only benefitted from this unusual law (in comparison to rest of the US) a couple of times, knowing this law exists is nice though. We had plenty of opportunities to exercise this freedom, however, since we were already at the posted I calculated it would be inviting a LEO conversation or worse yet creating a bad relationship on the road which should always be avoided.

We enjoy a spirited ride however do check ourselves on road laws to prevent the inevitable continued escalation of aggressive riding until you are doing nothing other than racing on a public road.
