Where to find mirror knuckle?

After parking my new '87 Concours on my hardpacked gravel driveway (on it's centerstand), I came home two days later to find it on it's right side. Apparently the interm thaw softened the gravel enough to drop her over. I hadn't even fired it up yet. Is that a record for a drop? Anyway, no damage except the metal connecting knuckle that holds the mirror out from the fairing is broken. I took the mirror apart and found that the ball portion of the knuckle joint shattered. Otherwise everything is OK. I'd rather not buy a whole new mirror when only one part is broken. Does anyone know where I can get a replacement. Again, this is the ball portion of the metal knuckle and it is the portion that bolts onto the mirror side not onto the fairing side. Thanks. Hans

I am not sure this includes all the way to your part or not. You can call Mr. Murph and ask. It may be the only way to get the part though. http://www.murphskits.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=193 ---------------------------------- South Central Area Director Email scad@cog-online.org

The only part I can think of is the 10mm bolt that is right under the flexible rubber. I just had to tighten my right side mirror and followed the instructions on mirror droop tightening in the tech pages. If that is all that busted it should be an easy fix by just replacing the 10mm bolt - I can't imagine anything happened to the female end. Take a look on the tech pages and see if that is it. 98 Windsor Green Connie 11k

None of the microfiches list components inside the mirror assembly for Big K. Means it probably comes from a subcontracter as a complete assembly. It is part number 56001A for the right side. Murph's has a good price including shipping. Not sure if BikeBandit's AMA discount applies to parts (another source). If we knew the subcontractor, maybe individual parts could be ordered. It could be a common part in some application though, available from a NAPA store for $.75. Might be the best thing to try is to take it to a parts store and see what they've got. Doesn't cost anything to look.

I have never seen the component parts of the mirror anywhere. You have to buy the whole assy. Murph has the best price and speedy delivery. Those of us that have been around for a while fixing Connies for friends and family have a box of mirror parts, to repair them. You can even split the plastic and swap the mirror glass out. Over the years they have changed the knuckle design so not all parts fit all mirrors except the glass itself. Just in case you think of trying you can't even go to auto-glass and have the make you a mirror glass as its slightly convex, and a flat glass will crack upon assy (ask me how I know LoL) Colin Prior Cogmos Administrator Lake Forest Park WA COG#7767 AMA#1081764

Two pictures of the knuckle. The first is of the knuckle seperated showing the busted portion. The second is how they would look inside the rubber boot between the fairing and the mirror body. If not available separately, does any have a "parts mirror" they'd like to sell. I'd rather not spend $100 on a new mirror when all that's wrong is the connector. Again, thanks. I sure hope the pictures show up! 2 mirrors on E-bay right now. 1 left 1 right bid on left is about $15 right now. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Left-Mirror-87-ZG-1000-Concours_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trkparmsZ72Q3a1205Q7c66Q3a2Q7c65Q3a12Q7c39Q3a1Q7c240Q3a1318Q7c301Q3a1Q7c293Q3a1Q7c294Q3a50QQ_trksidZp3286Q2ec0Q2em14QQhashZitem140315034845QQitemZ140315034845QQptZMotorcyclesQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories#ebayphotohosting 1990 Aint she a pretty Tomato (the bike ofcourse) wedshots albums http://community.webshots.com/user/sawfiler64/albums/most-recent

Hans, Make sure you find out that the "whole assembly" - i.e. the guts (ball and all) are included. Reason being, from the picture you can't tell if it's all in there. That's pot metal stuff and you cannot tighten the nut too tight when you get it or you'll crack it. I had a 'drooping mirror' and snugged it too tight and it cracked. Just check with the seller that the whole assembly is there. Hoogie/Baldeagle

Now that I see what you're talking about, I'll +1 Sawfiler's eBay call. That's obviously very specific to this assembly. eBay's a good place to get all things Connie since they've been making them mostly (not completely) unchanged for 21 years and Big K's so pricey. $3.95 for a 10mm bolt. Ha!

I think I have a couple of old mirrors in my junk pile. I'll check this weekend and see if the knuckle part is good. Drop me a line at magnum1b@gmail.com to remind me.

I had a similar break experience, but my ball and socket were such that I could get it together just long enough to glob JB Weld all over it, once I had the position right. Mine is no longer adjustable, but how often do you need to adjust them, once you have them set correctly? ;) Cost a lot less than a replacement mirror. Allan
