1979 R65 BMW

Ranger Jim

Sport Tourer
I've got the chance to pick up a '79 R65 BMW for $1000. The bike is in fair condition. The present owner had dual disk front brakes installed and has done some other minor work. It currently isn't running due to a dead battery (hasn't been running for about a year). From what he described as it's problems, it's nothing that I can't likely fix. Good buy or not? I'd be getting it as a knock around bike, not a tourer; just something lighter than the Connie to ride to the store for a loaf of bread or whatever.

That's a great price Jim. Any BMW that runs is worth at least $2K. I bought a 1972 R60 for cheap, road it awhile and later sold it for $2,200. They are a very comfortable, reliable bike, but not a lot of power. Don't pull out in front of a semi-truck thinking your gonna zip right up to the speed limit.....

You could try to jump it to see if it'll start, that'd tell you a lot right there. It wouldn't be your main bike so you wouldn't have to worry that it was down in your garage while you worked on it. The real question is can you afford a grand for a little mechanical experimentation. If so, I'd do it.

Ranger Jim, did you buy the BMW? If so how are things working out? '02 Connie COG # 6662 Dallas, Tx
