Butterfly Removal?

OK,I'm kinda a new guy here. I bought a used 08 in June. I've read bits and pieces on secondary butterfly removal. Can you guy's tell me..why I should do it? Why I should not do it? How do I do it? What happens after I do it? (warranty?). My bike has a single aftermarket Muzzy pipe installed by original owner. Map? Remap? I've Farkled the crap out of the bike since I've got it  :motonoises: Looking for some tinkering as fall settles in here in Michigan.  >:D

The reason for doing it would be to increase low end torque and throttle response.

The reason not to do it would be that you risk breaking the screws off in the shaft trying to remove them (they use threadlock on them at the factory), or you damage (bend) the shaft so it doesn't turn smooth and then the ECU triggers an FI error and the bike won't start. New throttle bodies cost $1,000 and no parts are sold for them separately, so if you mess it up, you'll have to replace the whole throttle body assy.

If you do decide to remove them, you really also need to add a Power Commander with a map made for your configuration.

Another alternative is the Guhl reflash of the ECU. This eliminates the need to remove them or add a Power Commander, since they simply reprogram them to open up sooner.

Everything Fred said as to why to do it and it really is not that hard or time consuming to do. Just get the proper long JIS screwdriver, available at Sears or from Snap On (the route I took). I heated the tip of the screw driver before inserting in the screw heads, let it sit a bit then slowly applied torque to each screw and had no issues what so ever. Go for it. the bike is fun now.

Given that you would need a power commander anyway if you remove them and that you already have the exhaust, i'd vote for the Guhl Motors flash,  you are going to spend money on a PC anyway, may as well have it done so that you don 't have to physical modify the TB's (and thus risk damage) if you can get the same results from a flash :)
