carb stick problem?

MaD MiKe

Bicycle
I once said I'd never buy another bike with carbs but here I am with this wonderful time machine so now I have to get into the carb learning curve.. Now to the question: Is there a breather hole in the bottom portion of the old mercury Carb Stick? If so I have it covered with tape. I ain't used these things in YEARS!! OOPS, I almost forgot, I have another question for ya'll.. ;) How do you get the air out of the mercury?? I had one column that had the mercury separated by air bubbles. 2007 650 V-Strom 2006 ZG1000 Concours 1999 Turbocharged Vulcan Nomad 1979 KZ1000ST (a work in slow progress)

On my Motion Pro carb stick, there is a vent that needs to be open to use them. Mine has a small hose used to open or close the vent. As for the separated mercury, try swinging the carb stick like you would a thermometer. That should move the mercury back down to the reservoir and eliminate the gap. Hope this helps. I had so much fun (NOT) with my carb stix that I bought the 4-vacuum gauge set from JC Whitney for $59 and never used it again... if the frustration gets too much that's another option that works well and doesn't cost an arm and a leg and a hand. Vent helps, I think the columns bounce less with vent open. Forcing the merc back into the reservoir should fix that other thing but hanging on my wall that is where it all is anyway. ---------------------------------- South Central Area Director Email scad@cog-online.org

Thanks for the responses and I'll swing the rascals till the mercury settles to the bottom plus open up the breather hole while using them.. When not it use I can now leave them hanging in the garage up and out of prying hands and eyes, my grandchildren are older now and seem to listen to Grandpa a wee bit better .. As long as these old rascals work I will keep them in service and I read somewhere that I might be able to use some sort of smaller tubing a jet for a buffer or such in line to keep the merc from jumping all over the scale.. 2007 650 V-Strom 2006 ZG1000 Concours 1999 Turbocharged Vulcan Nomad 1979 KZ1000ST (a work in slow progress)
