I have some rust on the cap bolts. I'd like to get it removed so I don't introduce this crud into the forks even if I will disassemble and clean. I plan on using a brush and canned compressed air (I don't have a compressor). Sound good? Has anyone else encountered this?
YEP, dillema of the older bikes.....
Give it a good spraydown with PB-Blaster or 3-IN-one oil, then wipe it out well before pulling the caps. If you keep it "wet" with the lube, it won't be a problem, and if you are removing them for a re-build you have it covered already.
Make sure you completely loosen the top pinch bolts (and tap a flat bade screwdriver wedged into the split to spead it) before trying to loosen the top caps.....
just saying.....bt=dt.
