Lurch and cranky shifting when cold

Northstar

Tricycle
My 2005 lurches forward fairly heavily when I shift from neutral to first on take-off when the engine is cold (i.e just starting out). It is also VERY difficult to shift out of first (darn near impossible) until I have run a km or so and the oil warms up. I also noticed recently that it will sometimes slip out of first....again, only on start-up and the engine is cold. I have heard the Connie can be cranky before warming up (and god knows it is cold up here on da Rock this time of year)....but this cranky?? I am using a lighter oil (Kawi 10W-40) and this seems to have helped. Anyone else experiencing this and is there some adjustment or maintenance I should be taking care of before things get any worst? Works fine when she wakes up.

Ya, it's slow to warm up. I'd just give it another minute or 2 before launch. We passed by yer hood on our way to Cape Spear in June. 01 Conc, Mijami Floriduh OTP 06: http://tinyurl.com/2vk9o2 route map: http://tinyurl.com/4p7pmd

I would start w/ bleeding the clutch and slave clylinder. Do it just like you would the brakes. Also look to see if you have any seepage around the slave cylinder. If you still have problems you might want to "rev the engine" a little before putting it into gear. This usually makes it easier to shift up/down the gear range especially when you are at a stop or slowing down to come to a stop.

You should squeeze and release the clutch lever 4-5 times before you try to put it into gear. That frees up the clutch plates. Cold oil tends to the "thick" and doesn't flow easily. Give her a couple of minutes to warm before starting out.

Thanks everyone for your advise on this....will try the easy things first...sounds like I just need to have a little more patience in preparing for launch...maybe let the thermometer needle get to the top of the white. Will let you know how that works out. Paulie...hope you enjoyed the trip to "da Rock".

Trust Zorlac. I use rotella synth and it helped my shifting when cold.

The warming up real good before launch and pumping the clutch a few times helped a LOT. Thanks for the advise. My oil is just touching the top of the window gauge mark so I might bring that down a little as well. I am very interested in the Mobil 1 0W-40 ....temperatures are rising so I think I will try that next spring or in the fall.

Zorlac, Let us know how that Energy Saving oil works out on your next oil change. "Fixed" is past tense BTW. ;) I've been running it for over a year, works well, it's not an energy conserving oil with the evil friction modifiers.

That's great, Brian. I'm a firm believer in KIS, esp since many of US are simple. ;) And the Conc's a simple machine. The oil level appears to vary, but if there's no leak I'd just let it be. Yup, our ride to the Rock was great... http://www.cog-online.org/clubportal/mboards/viewmessages.cfm?clubID=1328&Forum=1414&Topic=19520&keywords=8%2E7k 01 Conc, Mijami Floriduh OTP 06: http://tinyurl.com/2vk9o2 route map: http://tinyurl.com/4p7pmd
