Photo Size Too Small?

What gives with the 128 KB limit on photos, guys and gals?  Any chance it can be a bit more?

Well it helps to limit the space used up by the database.
The larger the size of the images allowed the slower the DB gets used up.
IIRC 128K is the default, that gives a 500 x 400 pix image which is big enough for 90% of the posters

for example

Understood Colin - most sites I belong to allow up to 2 GB, that's what I was using for my point of reference.

Peter

p.s. haven't been over here for a while - site looks a lot better than the original - good work.  Also, lots of old friends I'd almost forgotten about.

Thank for not letting us forget about you!  :wee_hee: :1rij:  :friends:
Umm, ya... we got new smileys to use too  :13:

I too find the picture sizing a bit too small.  It's a booger to take photos at 4-5mb and then size them down to 128k.  I know there are space issues with every site, but... ahem... some others have increased some sizes and even allow imbedding video, etc.  I'm just sayin' ...  :D

You can use a photo editing product (I use Irfanview, free for non-commercial http://www.irfanview.com/) to bulk resize pictures to a fixed long-side length like 640 pixels, generally enough to get even high pixel rate photos to that size.

Or open an account on Photobucket or another picture hosting site, and just link it inline using the IMG tags. Photobucket even creates the tags for you automagically below your pictures, just click on the IMG tag and it copies the whole link to your clipboard, click in your edit window on here and paste. Don't even need to use the forum's button to make the tag, it does the whole line for you:

After clicking on an image IMG line in PhotoBucket, the IMG line is put in your clipboard and pastes into the forum like this:

Code:

I did it twice for the two pictures here.

(See, Ted, I am working on the pics, I promise! :rotflmao:)

I would still suggest resizing your photos to no more than about 800 pixels on the widest side even if used in-line, or they start to require a scroll bar for people with smaller resolution monitors. I used to stick to 640, but most people have larger monitors these days, so now i go with 800.

Irfanview resized that almost 5MB picture file selected down to 640 pixels wide and the new file size is 181KB at 95% compression, 278KB for 800 pixels wide at 95%. I think maybe a compromise may be in order, to perhaps 300KB? Just a suggestion.

(This pic was a 10MP JPG from a Canon point-and-shoot, your file sizes may vary...)

Oh, and if you find your in-line pic is too big, you can also adjust the width displayed within the forum rather than resizing, re-uploading, re-pasting, etc. Just specify a width in your IMG tag.

Both are referencing the same picture file on PB, but the forum sizes and keeps the perspective unless you specify a height as well:
