purchased my '09 with a near new set of Angel GTs already mounted. After a hair more than 5000 miles, I noticed the rear is a 180/55. I was wondering why my speedo was off by 6-7 mph, guess now I know. Do I replace it with a 190/50 or a 190/55? Thanks in advance for the input.

The 180(width of tire) would not ordinarily have an impact like that on your speedometer. The impacting factor is the 50 or 55(height of sidewall).

However, I would expect the 180 tire profile is being changed (flattened) as the sidewalls are cambered out to fit the 190 rim. This flattening by the sidewalls not being vertical as designed may be effectively reducing the height of the tire… a thought at least.

I use the 190/55. The profile gives improvement for turn-in, also the 55 height offers a more accurate readout on the speedometer.

Note: Kawasaki / Factory recommendation is 190/50; above selection is only my personal preference.

IIRC the 180/55 17 is actually a little larger in diameter than the stock 190/50 17. I think that some said that the 180 tire would be less spherical (more triangular?) in shape and thus would turn easier than the 190 tire. Most (me too) prefer the 190/55 17. My cornering skill is not proficient enough to notice the cornering improvement of having a taller rear tire, but I like having a more accurate speedo', slightly longer tire wear, but mostly the 190/55 makes it easier to get up on the center stand which is lowered on top of a dolly in my garage.

I tried a 180/55 in the Shinko Verge 011. They don't make a 190/55 in that tire. I liked it. Those Verge 011's had a quick turn-in/lean over that I liked and didn't change a lot with mileage. For just handling feel, I liked them better than the RSIII's I have now.
