Rear end wobble

Somerset

Big Wheel
I was riding the other day with my brother, he was following me and said that the rear was wobbling at around 60 mph. and it got worst when I was following a tractor trailer. I have new Dunlop on it. The bike feels very twichy. what do you think could cause that. 97 Connie with 85000 on it, I just bought the bike Andr

Check the rear engine mounting bolts most likely one of the bolts has sheered off. Don't just look at them, try turning with a socket, if it it at all loose its broken. Common failure on this bike.

Also make sure your tire pressures are per the manufacturers' specs. Sometimes tire manufacturers have different specs than the bike owners manual. Also make sure the tire bead has been seated all around because this can cause it to wobble. Also empty out your saddlebags to see if this corrects it - if they are too heavy or not loaded properly it could cause this. Also make sure you have some air in your shock and the damping adjustment is correct for your size, any extras on the bike. All that's under the right side cover. Max PSI is 50 lbs and you need to use a hand pump to inflate it because a compressor could blow the seals out of the shock. How's the front tire look? Good luck, keep us posted. The bike blows around a lot in the wind and exp. behind trucks. If you did not feel that anything was wrong then I wonder if there is. The bags also bounce some. Never hurts to check all these things but did YOU feel anything wrong? ps: Check front wheel bearings also. Photos[/url]

Personally I think the D205's on my Connie feel very twitchy. Although I dont have anyone riding behind me providing feedback. Has new front and rear wheel bearings. Will check motor mounts. Rear suspension and swingarm bearings are original at 56K. Was thinking next spring with a ZG1400 shock to replace the sagging ZZR1200 shock. 2003 Concours, 56K COG #6953 IBA 28004 http://home.comcast.net/~slybones/Concours/connieMain.htm

Side note, pretty much same setup except for wheel bearing change felt steady as a rock with Pilot GT's on there. Dunlop D205's felt twitchy from dayone. 2003 Concours, 56K COG #6953 IBA 28004 http://home.comcast.net/~slybones/Concours/connieMain.htm

What about the goldwing size Michelin Pilot, Could it help, and will it change the handling
The tire has been discontinued. It does help greatly. I had the same issues with the stock Dunlops but decided to wear them out instead of switching right away. They were very twitchy in bad air like cross winds or behind large vehicles. I have had Pilot GT's on for about 10,000 miles and they are very stable especially on the highway. Adding the "wing" size tires does slow the bike handling slightly but it makes up for it in stability and smooth ride. Setting the Dunlops to 42 psi front and rear helped my bike some but different tires made all the difference for me.

In the Wing sizes, a lot of folks like the Michelin Pilot GT. I'm running the Avon Venom in a bias ply and am very happy with them. Eother tire would be a good choice in the Goldwing sizes.
