rear shock shot ???

Ron Moss

Moped
Today I saw the first ever leak under my Concours (2006) After looking I saw it was coming from the rear shock. It is an amber colored fluid coming out of the rubber surounding the shock. I assume this is the shock oil. I am open to any and all help. can it be repaired or must it be replaced. http://www.flickr.com/photos/18637153@N03/4714310421/in/set-72157602975769216/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/18637153@N03/4714307125/in/set-72157602975769216/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/18637153@N03/4714945314/in/set-72157602975769216/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/18637153@N03/4714943010/in/set-72157602975769216/

Hi Ron; The network nazis at work won't allow me access to your photo so I'll shoot form the hip, er mouth, here. I've not heard of anybody having a shock leak before, maybe I'm not in the know but it's very surprising to hear that a 2006 example of the breed has a leak. My first thought would be that perhaps the shock was over pressurized through an attempt to fill it from an air compressor. There is such a small volume inside the shock for air that an air compressor with like 100 lbs. in the tank will pop the seal in an instant. I use an electric compressor which doesn't store any air and is a high pressure/low volume type of outfit which always starts up from 0 psi. The stock shock cannot be rebuilt AFAIK and I don't know if it is possible to reseat the original seal or replace it - somebody else with more smarts should jump on this thread...

Check the hose that runs from the shock to under the side cover. It 'can' come loose. Too much air, it'll pop. I've only been a COG'r since 2004, but I haven't heard of anyone ever rebuilding the stock shock. Find one on eBay if you need a 'new' one, or ask here...someone has a spare setting around. (I think I've got 2 laying around if you need one) http://www.millerized.com I'll be in the garage

I bought the bike from a Kawasaki dealer with only 1722 miles on it. The PO didn't like the bike and traded it back in for a Gold Wing. The only thing I could think of was to much pressure was used and it took this long to show up. I have always used the Motion Pro air hand pump for shocks.

The hose if fine, the leak is coming from under the rubber cover.

Not to throw you in another direction, but I replaced my stock with a Progressive from Murph's. It is the heavy duty version and I have been much happier with it for several years now. Got rid of the stock in the first year, think it is still in the garage.

Whancha talkin about Brooke! Ya can't wear out tires! LOL! PS, hwy 120 east of Mammoth,a roller coast road, 115 mph air borne, the shock leaked after. No!! I will not do it again!
