Route 24 through IN and IL

En route to Tomah I am planning on route 24 across IN and IL, to Peoria, avoiding ChiTown. Does anyone know how 24 is running now? Construction, etc.? Is there a better route to get from Lima, Ohio to Peoria? Back roads fine, I'm trying to stay off the slabs. Thanks much in advance!
