Saddlesore 1,000 question

Been planning a Saddlesore route and have the following concern: My route comes to 1,004 miles on MapSource and my concern is that some other mapping source might find it to be only 999. How much reliance does IBA give one's odometer readings over an independent mapping source? And how much does off-route trips for food, gas, and rest factor into the mileage goal? Any help would be much appreciated. COG #8892 CDA #0309 So glad this Vol can tour!

Your question would be best directed to.... kneebone@ironbutt.com He is after all, the one that will decide if you qualify.

Need a partner? THis is a much easier untertaking with moral support. I still haven't been able to complete the 1500 in 24 hour ride. 0 for 3. I hit a mental barrier at the 1200 - 1300 mile mark. I think the 1000 in 24 and 1500 in 36 are challenging but still fun. I want to try the CC50 in the spring.

I recommend you add another 50 or so miles to your route. Being so is just as you stated. The IBA Certification team may (often does) not agree with your milage as such. They wil scrutinize the route to see if there are any alternative (shorter and faster) routes available between your anchor or receipt points anywhere on the route. They also may not use just mapsource as their criteria mapping program, and they've seen it all! You should have enough time to add the extra insurance miles, because missing it by a couple miles would really, really, no it would really suck! I assume you've read the 29 tips and several trip reports on the IBA forum? This will really help you in your attempt. Best of luck! AKA "2linby" That's 2-lin-by folks! Hey, thanks bunches for the help! Yes, the IBA 29 have been read and re-read. I did suspect that the mileage was cutting it a bit close. I am planning a Saddlesore that takes me from northwest Georgia to New Orleans and back. Via Birmingham the route one-way is 477 miles. Via Montgomery the route is 507 miles. Would it be best to: 1) just re-trace my route through Montgomery for a total of 1014 miles or 2) do the loop route through Birmingham and Montgomery and add a secondary loop between New Orleans and Hammond, LA for a total of 1,042 miles. Trip #1 allows me to get familiar with stops for the return but is just a redo of the first leg Trip #2 gets me to NO faster (there's definitely a meal stop planned here!) and still avoids travel across the Lake Ponchartrain bridge which can be susceptible to winds. Suggestions welcome (yes, gumbo or etouffee is on the menu and companions will definitely be considered). COG #8892 CDA #0309 So glad this Vol can tour!

Can you email me a copy of your garmin mapsource file. I'd be happy to look at it for you. BTW my first SS1000 I mapped out 1023 miles and he certficate reads 1009 miles! And so far with all my certs the mileage I submitted was greater than that of the cert. In some cases only a couple miles, in others up to 25! Don't know exactly where the discrepencies lay, but they do, so why take a chance of missing the mark by a couple miles! Love to see your route. AKA "2linby" That's 2-lin-by folks! I would agree with Bob, add some miles to the ride. You can easily make 1050 to 1100 miles in 24 hours. I've done four Ironbutts (two with Bob) and the main theme I do is have patience. I've run them in 18 hours to 23 hours. You don't need to speed. Take it from an old fart.

Agree with Pignut, speeding is not the answer. Planning and consistency is. Off route stops do not effect your mileage as much as they effect your time management and get you off plan. I would plan it all out. PointA - PointB 8:00am to 9:45am PointB - PointC 10:00am to 12:30pm PointC - PointD 12:45pm to 3:00pm Lunch 3:00pm - 3:30pm PointD - PointE bla, bla bla ... Nap 2:00am - 3:00am PointM - PointN 3:00am - 4:45am Then stick to your plan. It does not take much unplanned off route stops to mess you up. This is were I think people get into trouble. Also note that each stop as 15min in between. Dont just fuel up and ride off. Stretch, walk, eat, drink, buy more suppies, etc during this time. 2003 Concours, 56K COG #6953 IBA 28004 http://home.comcast.net/~slybones/Concours/connieMain.htm

Did get some response from the IBA that the route as planned was cutting it a tad too close for meeting the ironbutt criteria safely, so a route extension is being developed. Will have lots of time to consider the project now, as I work weekends from now through April 15. Lots of time to plan the performance before getting to perform the plan... I agree that around 1050 is a good safety margin. My best tips for success are: Leave really early, like 4 or 5 am at the latest. It is more fun to see the sun come up than it is to ride longer after dark. Do not eat a meal. Snack as you go, it will keep you from getting the nappish feeling that a full meal can bring on. Plan your route to keep the sun at your back if possible. There's certainly more, but you can read em elsewhere, and I know you didnt ask anyway.... Good luck with it, it's probably going to be easier in reality than it is in your head.
