Spring Fling Northeast, RI May 2012

We have a Spring Fling scheduled for 17 through 20 May, 2012 in Westerly, RI. As far as I know, this is the first time a rally is being held in RI so we are trying to make it as nice as possible. The Winnapaug Inn is located just off the coast of southern RI, and the banquet will be held in the Venice restaurant right next door. The meal will be a <sort of> pig roast and will include both roast pork as well as smoked turkey. There are quite a few attractions nearby including Newport RI, Mystic CT, Battleship Cove in Fall River, MA and about fifty miles north is Boston with all of its history and attractions. There will also be some great riding through central RI and into nearby MA and CT along scenic, secondary roads as well as routes for trips to Mystic, Newport and some other local attractions. I am also going to try to have an informal ride 'n eat at both Mystic Pizza and the best local chowder and clam cake house, which is a nice ride up the RI coast from the hotel.

The banquet will be held on Friday to allow us to also take part in the Twisted Throttle open house on Saturday afternoon. Twisted Throttle is moving to a brand new location, having food, raffles and entertainment, such as the international slow- riding, world championship for the open house. It is also a great place to see farkles and general motorcycle accessories in person as well as to try things like Gerbings heated clothes on for size.

This event is open to non- COG members, and non- Kawasaki members as well. We encourage anyone interested in having a good time and meeting a great group of people to come by and see what our little part of COG is all about.

I am very much looking forward to seeing everyone in May at the RI Spring Fling. This event is in the calendar and available for registration at:

Not sure if I will make this or not. I would like to. But being very close to the national may creat problems for me (if I get to the national). But we'll see. I'm sure the family would like to do this one also. Are there any turns in the 5 miles or so that is RI?  :))

If you can't do the entire weekend, there is always the option of coming overnight for the banquet.

Yeah, I think there might be a turn or two in RI. :)  In fact, I will lay out a route north through the state along Rt. 116 which is one of the nicest rides in New England in my opinion. Then of course there is the trip over both bridges and both islands in the bay to the other side of the state; that one contains turns left- right as well as turns up- down.

Yeah, I really considered the National before locking this one in and would not have done it if I thought it would make any appreciable impact on the National rally. After the show of hands regarding the local / national question in Lake George, I was convinced that not many people at all would be diverted to one or the other but instead would make concrete plans for one and fit the other rally in as they could, just like you are doing. And as Steve said, you could come Friday night for the banquet, stay over one night, attend the open house at Twisted Throttle the next day and still be home for a late dinner Sat. night. So there is the option of being at the rally and not taking so much time away from home too.

Can't imagine not going. My C14 will be barely past the 3,000 mile oil change, if that. Google mapping says its about 8 hours from Hagerstown MD to the Inn, so 7 hours the way I ride.

I can do that in one sitting on a C14.

We'll see what happens. I'm sure the wife is going to have some input on this!  ;)

We'd love to make this but I have a sneaking suspicion that's the weekend the kid comes home from college with all her stuff! We'll probably have to take two cars out to get her and her home.  :-[

I'm going to start the planting of the seed at my house!  I'll water it and give it lots of light.  I'll even talk to it and put miracle grow on it and hope it grows into a real live permission plant!!!! >:D

Looks like about 12 hrs for me, have to see what the calendar is like then. Vacation is booked for the year, union rules. May change but definitely want to go to Arkansas! Heh Pdlt, if you need any help maybe I could send down some Canadian fertilizer. :)) or worst yet some herbs, my bad ::)

I work for the State of Maryland, and the rank and file in my Division are in the union. I guess they don't have to book all at once, if they did, I would too. But I'm an officer, ie management, so I don't belong to the union.

But I still have to request leave far enough in advance that they can't drum up some reason to reject the request.  :motonoises:

EDIT: woohoo "roadbike" avatar title

For the non-riding SO, Westerly and surrounding environs are a great area for golf and (shudder) shopping.  The inn is right next to a public golf course that is pretty unique for the area (yes, not only do I occassionally ride an R bike but I also spend some time losing golf balls).  There's another fairly unique public course in neighboring Groton, CT.  Westerly has some nice downtown shopping, there's conventional shopping not far from the inn a little further east and nothing can ring up the ol' MasterCard faster than a shopping trip to Newport (the quaint section).  Personally, I wouldn't trade riding for golf or shopping ('cept maybe at Tristed Throttle) but non-riding SOs might be thrilled and ever so thankful (finally) that you dragged them along to another frickin' bike rally.

Last but not least, if the SO doesn't want to drive and doesn't want to ride, there is Amtrak service to Westerly.  Where else can you go to a rally and keep the SO happy so many different ways (and leave you free to ride)? :motonoises:

Yep, airports too.

Before deciding on this venue, I was looking at using a hotel in CT and having the banquet dinner in RI- both facilities are on the same road and only about 1/2 mile from each other. But I thought it would make a fantastic tag- line for a rally: "The rally so big no single state could contain it!"

The fall rally in Matamoras has that beat. From the hotel parking lot, you can be in three different states in about one minute, just going for fuel.  :p

OK, were signed up and reservations made. But I should have kept my mouth shut. They charged me extra for my daughter. Good thing she was not an adult. I would have been more yet!  :-[

Great- glad to see people signing up for this event. Glad Mrs. Bob and Bobette are coming as well. But I have to say, talking too much and getting yourself into trouble just does not sound like you Bob....

Brian I couldn't miss this one in my own backyard (almost), it will be fun riding down to Westerly (Where's that? In Connecticut?) anyway as a Rhode Islander I can't and won't miss this one.

If you need any help send me an I'm or call me.

Now all I need to do is sign up. hahahaha  :))

Oh I believe you missed some attractions like the casinos?
8)
Anyway it is a great state, small as it is, with lots to see and lots of good riding in the area.

OK folks, I'm in! 8)

My better half is still on the fence as to whether she's coming or not.  Still not comfortable leaving my 16 yo son in charge for a whole day including school wakeup. :))

I'm there no matter what.....WE'RE HAVIN A DAMN PIG ROAST WOOOT!!!!!!!

Unfortunately my motorcycle boyfriend has forsaken me for a track day....he's such a track ho! ;)

Now my bride has decided to maybe make it a family getaway and bring the kids.  It's still up in the air but it would be great to have her meet the new crew.  She was a rally regular and class A passenger until the kids came along.  She can't ride due to health issues but she sure can join us around the fire pit for some hijinks...and she's no stranger to that! :beerchug:

Tracey and I booked our room.  Thurs - Sun.  Really looking forward to this rally so close to our home in MA.
Eager to ride rt 116 and see everyone.

I have to book soon, not sure but it looks as if we will have to work till 1pm Thursday. Harriet (SO) has to take a mental health day from school Friday. Oh well only about an hour to 2 hour ride depending if slab or backroads. Can't wait, need some R&R. Can't get the time off for the National this year so this will be the next best thing (or maybe even better, 60-70 degrees).  Bob

Not to worry...  THU is considered a travel day and the rally check-in will not begin until late afternoon or evening. IIRC, hotel check-in is not until mid afternoon.

Bob C, Steve is correct, when I called to make my reservation they told me that check in time was 3pm.  I thought it was kinda late, but thats what they said.

See you there,
Alex

OK Patricia and I have booked a room. We plan to leave Hamilton cross at Buffalo on the Wednesday and arrive in RI Thursday evening, leave Sunday. Anyone from here want to meet up? We can discuss at our 2nd Tues of the month meet & greet in Milton. Plan is 3 days home, avoids trying to cross the border on the Monday of OUR long weekend. Now I have to remeber to book with COG :-[

Booked my room yesterday.

Warning: the guy on the phone confirmed the $79/night rate, but the confirmation that was e-mailed to me did not match (each day was a different rate).  Called back today and the woman on the phone claimed that she took care of it and would e-mail me a new confirmation ... still waiting for the new e-mail.

Tried to book a room today but hotel wanted $130/nite. Said block of rooms were gone. I passed on the higher price.

That seems very odd.  Hopefully  just a glitch?  Maybe the rally host can look into this and post back here.

Yeah, it seems we are at or very close to the end of the block of reserved rooms. I am working on expanding that block right now; I expect that to be successful but if not, I will find other accommodations in the same area. Either way I will pass along the info. here to let everyone know.

OK, I have extended our block of rooms by 10 more, and of course at the original reserve price. These rooms will be held until 1 April and then they will be released from our block and also revert to the normal pricing. The price for the reserved rooms is what was originally stated, which was $79 per night for all three nights. A contact person at the hotel is Maria so if there are any questions please feel free to ask for her directly or contact me via e-mail or phone (my number is in the contact information in the calendar section for this event).

If we use all the rooms available I will book some rooms in another hotel as needed. Please let me know if that happens and I can make those arrangements.

Looking forward to seeing all you folks at this event!

Brian

Hi All,
Just booked our room. Talked to Maria and got the $79 rate. Much needed R&R&R ( Rest, Relaxation and Riding).
Gonna be a good time, see you you all there.
Bob

Booked my room!  :motonoises:  checked my email for confirmation and saw they didn't give me the discounted rate :'(. I guess I gotta call them up!!!!!

You can probably either give them a call or simply e-mail them about this. Most likely anyone answering the phone can straighten this out but Maria and Joseph specifically are familiar with COG and the negotiated rates.

Just to remind everyone, you will have to mention COG and ask for the discount when booking the room.

Please let me know if there are any other problems and I will assist in correcting them.

When we originally set this thing up we were concerned about meeting minimums for the banquet on Friday night. Now it looks like we might run out of hotel rooms. Go figure....  If that happens, I will track down additional rooms at another hotel / motel in the area.

Brian

I've sent two e-mails, neither of which have been answered.  When I get a few minutes, I've got to call, too, to make sure they gave me the proper rate (the first confirmation did not show it).

Well in that case, perhaps e-mail to that hotel won't work. I have never tried to contact them that way, only in person or via telephone.

You should be able to call nights or weekends too if you have trouble finding time during weekdays. I don't think I have called them on weekends but someone should be there all day and at least early evenings on weekends.

I had problems with email with them also. I never got a conformation of my reservation. After a while I sent them another email through their contact us. Again weeks without any responce. So last weekend, I actually got someone to answer the phone (nobody ever answered everytime I tried since booking the room). They had my name & email address spelled wrong. Thus no conformation.  So when I sent the contact us email, they might have not known who I was. But all is fine now. So to make a long story longer. Why not just try calling them. If you can someone on the phone, they may handle it right then. Just a thought.

Ok. Made a phone call. Not sure who I talked to, but she assured me that I was paying $79 per night. So I'll take her at her word. I'd come no matter what price I had to pay (within reason) but if I can save $100 I'll take it! :49:

Hi All,

The clerk said the office is only open 9am to 5pm.  I booked Tuesday over the phone and I haven't received an email confirmation yet.

He did quote the $79 rate and he mentioned COG.

I'll wait a few days but if I don't get an email I'll have to call them back. I'm assuming my name is spelled wrong also, I don't think they get too many french Canadian visitors.  ^-^

Claude

I booked on March 13th with Maria on the phone and gave my email addy.
I haven't received email confirmation yet either.
She did quote the Cog price so I think I'm ok.
They may be a little slow to send email confirmation so I will wait until end of next week to call on this.

I had to bug them a couple times over a couple days, becoming more insistent each time,  before they finally sent me a confirmation.
I've heard others having issues with getting a timely confirmation.  It's Rhode Island, what do you expect... ?  :))

Are you forgetting the time zone difference between RI and CT Mitch?

:)

It is a small hotel and they might be overloaded. Then again, it might just be lackadaisical service. Either way, it is a nice place that I think everyone will like.... once you get past the reservation part. I say this based on a few visits; I have not actually stayed there yet myself.

Brian...yeah it is a nice area. Lived in Mystic back in the '80s and spent considerable time in Westerly and Misquamicut. Looking forward to the Fling. Your efforts to organize it are appreciated.....it's all good!  :great:

OK folks, it is the Ides of March (15 March) at 8:30 PM and there are six (6) rooms available for the Spring Fling. Those who want one and have not yet booked it might want to go ahead and grab a room as it is not likely the hotel will be building any more rooms on before May....  :)

I booked awhile ago and today, because this message scared me, I called them and they confirmed I'm booked.

Does anyone have a room with a double bed that they would like to share for this event?  I am still unemployed and would love to go to this event but right now I can't swing the room.

Let me know.

Thanks,

Tom Kerrigan

Yep, what Steve said- I believe the room prices will go up $50 / night after 31 March. Besides that, there are only a few rooms left so if you are thinking about making reservations, now might be the time.

I have heard that  there still may be rooms available a little north of the rally on the estate. Rumor has it that you canceled Otto's weekend off that weekend.  >:D

Finally signed up for this fine event. We are really looking forward to the rally, the Twisted Throttle
open house and hanging out with a great group of COG friends. Now its time for everyone to put in
the excellent weather requests and get ready to ride  :motonoises:

WillyP & Steve,

Nice job coming up with those. Are they in our little smiley library? if not they should be. (Looks like Steve has his in the library now)

WillyP, Your first one looks like it's a tribal council scene from Survivor  :)

That is correct- I gave Otto one job, to keep an eye on Kirby and keep him out of the kitchen. I hung the very first cabinet and left the room for just a moment.

When I came back, guess what I found inside?

So Otto and Kirby are both in my bad graces. No vacations, days off or trips for either of them, even though Kirby wants to go to the Spring Fling quite badly....

Hey, wait a minute.... there IS NO OTTO!

I can vouch for battleship cove and the new England air museum.  Both are excellent for war buffs.  I could easily spend 1/2 day at each.

Yeah the Nautilus is close to the hotel. Although they don't let you through the whole sub (the reactor room and such is off limits). The price is right. IIRC, it's free. And even if it's not. It's worth visiting IMO.

Yep, Andrea and I are very much looking forward to this event. And Kirby is just beside himself.... :)

Time for the banquet dinner: cocktails at 6:30 PM and dinner at 7:00 PM.

Somehow we overlooked actually setting a time. As some folks are coming to the dinner after work, this should give enough time for everyone to get there in time for dinner. It is a buffet so even arriving a bit after the 7:00 PM start should not be a problem. And if someone is late enough that the main course is over, please feel free to take any food Cap'n Bob has left. The easiest way is to distract him ("Hey, is that Elvis over there?") then grab his plate and run as he looks for Elvis.  ;D

I have put in a request for good weather with the state but cannot guarantee that they will follow through.

I heard a rumor that Cap't Bob is only eating watercress and cucumber finger sandwiches these days...

I'm pretty easy to keep occupied. I remember having paper products as incoming projectiles keeping me from eating, not long ago. Good thing the waitress got in the way to shield us!    :))

That's why I sit next to Bruce, he's usually the one throwing the projectiles.  My only worry is becoming collateral damage. :))

And because of such juvenile behavior Mario's might be a COG free zone from now on! :-\

Well its their loss! :))

I said I was sorry.... What was funny about that was the other waitress laughing uncontrollably.

I hope you are kidding- that was pretty mild behavior really. It was just sugar packets and I was careful to crush the edges so no COGgers (or wait staff) were hurt in the eating of the meal. I mean it is not like we were throwing flatware around....

Not to worry, the dinner in RI will be held in a private room (just us) so Bob's our antics cannot spread to endanger innocent folks. By the way, there won't be any sugar available in the restaurant... or knives, or forks, or ice in the drinks. Safety first.

I am just hoping to live long enough to get thrown out of a retirement community and become an embarrassment to my children.... some more.

:D

Believe me they were QUITE happy with our arrangement.  Juvenile and COG goes hand in hand!  LOL

Well we have used up all the rooms at the Winnapaug Inn in Westerly, RI for the Spring Fling. There are two other hotels in the area that could be used though; The Breezeway Resort about  a mile from the Winnapaug Inn, and the Shelter Harbor Inn, about 3 miles from the Winnapaug Inn. I am not familiar with either place but the Shelter Harbor Inn was recommended by the folks at the Winnapaug Inn, while the Breezeway Inn is close and appears to be a nice place.

Let me know if you want to attend the Spring Fling and I can be of any assistance.

Brian

Steve & I have FINALLY made the decision to attend the Spring Fling.  We made a reservation at the Breezeway Resort.  The Breezeway is 1.2 miles from the Winnapaug Inn.

They have a special for 30% off when you book three nights.  They have rooms with King beds, queen with a murphy bed, or two double beds.  Total cost for 3 nights is $321 with tax.  I was pleased considering without the 30% off it would have been over $400.

Now I just have to register for the rally...
See you all there, we are looking forward to it.

Cucumber sandwiches? Cucumber sandwiches.....? Not very common in the US but in Merry Ole' England they seem to be well in style:

Sandwich - Durex Ad

:D

Fantastic- glad to hear you and Steve are going to attend.

That hotel seems very nice though- I am not familiar with it but from the descriptions, photos and reviews it seems like a great place. As high as the prices seem to be in late May, one month later and they would be almost untouchable. We are beating the start of the season by one week and that is really helping to keep the prices down.

See you all there, we are looking forward to it.

Sweet !! I'll see you guys on Friday !

Three weeks from today! Kirby is so excited he almost cannot stay still (he may not be going but I can't work up the courage to tell him that).

The hotel is sold out and they are polishing up the silverware and removing the sugar packets from all the tables in the banquet room as we speak. We are going to have a banquet room all to ourselves so I would ask you good people to help me in keeping an eye on Cap'n Bob as he tends to get out of hand anyway and without the restriction of other (non- COG) people around, we just do not know what he may do. And as always of course, those of you staying on the first floor of the hotel will need to watch out if you are near a 'splash zone' so wearing knee- high boots is just good sense.

I have put in a request for good weather but I don't know if my next door neighbor is really in charge of that.... if not there is $20 I'll never see again.

This thing is going to be so much fun it really makes me feel bad for the other 6,999,999,928 people who will NOT be there.

Very much looking forward to this. Please let me know if anyone has any questions or concerns and we will do our best to iron them out.

Brian

I hope you guys have great weather! I wanted to go, but have been part of the planning of a trip to the Great Smokey Mountains (aka Deals Gap) with my mc over the winter, and want to go with them. At least I'll be warm, and get a Dragon pin for my Connie.    :motonoises:

I have the routes for the Spring Fling done and they should show up as a downloadable link pretty soon.

I would be happy to lay out additional routes and have included some ideas for you folks to think about.

The text overview of the routes will be posted shortly, as soon as the routes are available for download. By the way, the routes are in three formats: Streets and Trips (.est), generic map format (.gpx) and MapSource (Garmin's format, .gdp) so most people should be able to download them directly. If not, let me know and we can work through it. Also I will be able to give you the file(s) in person if you have a GPS. Printed driving directions will also be available at the event.

OK, the self- guiding routes are posted at: http://www.cog-online.org/clubportal//EventDisplayNew.cfm?clubID=1328&EventID=155770&mo=5&tDate=%7Bd%20%272012%2D05%2D08%27%7D
under the header 'Riding'. This is a direct link to the download itself:
http://www.cog-online.org/clubportal/clubdocdisplay.cfm?clubID=1328&docID=20111&priv=0

To download the files, go to the top / right of the page and hit the hyperlink named Download. This file contains all the ride files in three formats- most people will probably want the one that ends in .gdp to use in Garmin devices directly.

The printed directions will be up in a day or so, probably in the same file. I will also have some copies of the printed directions at the rally for those who want them.

Brian, thanks for getting these out there.  Some good choices for riding and sight seeing.  I'm thinking of heading to Battleship Cove and good eats in Fall River at Patti's Pierogis - http://www.urbanspoon.com/r/238/1566408/restaurant/New-Bedford/Pattis-Pierogis-Fall-River.  Possibly the best Polish food on the east coast.

Battleship cove is great. But I never have enough time to see everything I want. There always seems to be time constraints.

Just a thought but seeing as COG has so many 'significant other' guests (compared with, say, a BMW riding group), Andrea and I have tried to put together some things that may be of interest to the Fe- Folks who will be attending; the two big attractions to the ladies will probably be Newport and for some, the casinos. I am absolutely sure that Battleship Cove will be well down the list of favorites for most women so here is a thought.... if a few males choose to ride over to Battleship Cove, they could bring the females and drop them off in Newport (someplace that is not usually a big male attractor, at least not to males beyond about 30 or so). Newport can be on the way, and the ride to Fall River via the two islands, and Newport, is a nicer ride than it is going via highway.

I have tourist schedules for things in Newport such as mansion tours so the time can be arranged. Battleship Cove is not a time or schedule sensitive place so the ride timing could be centered on whatever is going on in Newport.

Again, just a thought but I think a day laid out something like that could work.

Something for everybody….almost. Still have to find something for Carly to do / be interested in. Say, how does Carly feel about spending time with squirrels?
