Suzuki TS185 gas tank

A co-worker has acquired an old Suzuki TS185. The gas tank has apparently been coated with KREEM or a similar product. This coating is breaking down and creating a mess. Is there any way to remove this coating?
 
Be very careful with spilling any MEK on rags or cardboard. We had many fires at the boat building company I worked for back in the day due to MEK on rags or cardboard tossed in the trash. It is truly nasty stuff.
