This Forum saved me 500 Bucks!

I want to thank everyone that contributes to this forum.  Due to marriage and other obligations, I stopped riding for 28 years, and recently started searching again for a ride.  I tried to take my time and sort through the choices of Harley, Victory,  Honda, etc.  I previously owned a 1978 KZ-440, then a 1980 KZ-750 and then a 1982 KZ-1000.  Obviously I liked Kawasaki, and I just kept coming back to this forum and reading about how much you guys like the Concours.  I even read about the few knocks, and decided this is the bike for me!

In the end, the forum saved me 500 bucks because of the post by Fred Harmon announcing the July 4th star spangled savings offer.  I arrived at the dealer July 1st at 4 PM and was riding off on a Silver 2011 Concours by 10:30 the next morning.  After 800 miles the first week alone,  I'm super impressed by every aspect of the machine.  28 Years introduces a lot of improvements for sure!

The forum is full of great information.  I already pinned the bags, and trust me that I read everything about break-ins, oil types, etc.  So, if you average out every break-in/oil post like I did, you need to mostly follow the Concours service manual, keeping the revs in check, change the oil at 400 miles, 1000 miles, 1800 miles and 3000 miles.  From there change the oil every 3000 miles with Dino, until you reach 15,000 miles and from there jump to Synthetic.  Just kidding, but it could be that this is indeed the average of all information.

I look forward to contributing (not to CDA) when I learn more about the bike.

Glad to hear it. I also used to own a 1980 KZ750. Wish I still had it, that was a fun bike.

Let me save you some more money, and grief. Take that $500 you saved and apply it toward some Top Block tip over protection. You'll be glad you did. The average cost of repairs from one tip over event is between $600 - $700.

Congrats on the Concours!

I need to chime in as a member of the KZ750 club.  I had an 81 LTD.  :)

Welcome to Concours ownership...    The next step is meeting up with other COGgers.  There are lots of activities in the COG Northeast Area. Check out the online calendar of events. Of notable interest...  The national rally will be held in southern Vermont  AUG 8-12. It is close enough for you to attend.

The Rally sounds possible.  I loved that KZ 750, it had a great motor, frame and ride.

Fred, does the Top Block offer rider protection, or is that pure tip over protection?

Protection from what? A tip over of crash? Most of these are meant to be tip over bars and not crash bars. The may keep you from being pinned under the bike if you tip over. But they probably won't do that much in a big crash!

Its only intended to protect the plastic panels on the bike in the event you drop the bike at low or no speed. All bets are off in a crash.

Does  anybody have a price on the top blocks or the handicapped stall bars I can't find em anywhere.

Well MC enterprises (the handicap bars) said this right on the web site: "All components are sold separately. Call or email us for pricing and availability".

And Fred said the top blocks go for about $500. But I didn't go searching for the price.

The Top Block bars are about $560 (393 Euro)plus shipping from France (around $60), but the price will vary some due to the exchange rate on the Euro.

If you are interested in them, contact Tatiana at commercial-AT-top-block.com (replace -AT- with @)

She said she would do a 10% discount on group buys on quantities of 10 or more if someone wants to set up a group buy.

I like the blocks, but the cost is up there....I wish someone had a normal priced set.

I had a 78 kz 650 that I loved, but the 750 was a much better bike.

I wish  my tipover only cost that much!  I parked in a freshly paved parking lot and put the bike on the center stand.  While I was away, the stand sunk into the asphalt and the bike fell over. It might have been knocked over by some inattentive car driver though.  In any event,  that little tip over cost $2600. to repair at the dealership.  Glad my insurance decided to cover it (except for my $500 deductible.)

You might look at the R&G Racing "Adventure Bars". They cost about $330 from Twisted Throttle (US distributor). Here are links to the components at both Twisted Throttle and R&G Racing (a British company). You can view the components and installation instructions. I installed mine in less than 2 hours, including torquing all bolts/nuts as spec'ed (44 ft lb).
