Tire Repairable?

Jorge

I friend had a puncture on his rear tire recently. It's from a 2019(?) Gold Wing (latest generation), and the tire still has some life in it. I will add that he's not rich and if the tire is not repairable, his bike will be in the garage for a while.
Please, if you're in the "never repair/patch/plug a MC tire!" camp, refrain from answering as it will likely be unhelpful - thank you in advance.

The hole appears to be a small cut, rather than a nail hole. Crazy looking damage. Appears to have been caused by something having an "L" shape, with the long part having a sharp point at the top.
The two photos show the damage, with a 3/8 adapter shown for scale. He is considering removing the tire and patching it. Since the steel cord is visible, and I'm pretty sure a few steel strands were cut, my thought is that it is not repairable.
Currently, the tire takes several hours ()not days) to drop pressure and he has working TPMS system.

Thoughts? Is it repairable for local, low speed (he always stays below the speed limit) rides?

thanks! Jorge

I've patched and plugged tires before, and ran them for extended periods of time. I've also run a tire with a nail in it for a while....

The Goldwing is a HEAVY bike, and that's damage at the lower part of the tire, with cords showing. In addition, it already looks like his tire is a bit old, or has at least seen some age, given the rubber cracking in the second picture.

Can he run it and probably be fine if he does an internal patch above that area? Sure. You can give it a try. I just worry about the weight of the bike. If it goes, its gonna be bad....

Now, if that's in the sidewall? No go. Park the bike. But I'd do the soapy water test first, see how much its leaking, then pull the tire and put a flat patch behind it. I'd say that'll last another 1k miles at least.

This is all opinion, and based off of anecdotal, personal experience. Do NOT take what I said as some sort of rule to go by. Just my opinion. 😎

Suppose he never noticed the damage. What then?

Looks more like cosmetic damage than anything else. I've done worse with my C10 getting air born and coming down shredding the rear tire exposing the steel cords. Limped home at 45 MPH for more than 100 miles.

His bike, his gamble. As my tires wear down, so does the spirited rides until I get new tires.
His manual should have a chart specifying max speed under various tread conditions, remaining tread.

However, If it were my tires, I'd keep an eye on it and use it for slow speeds with guarded caution.

Expect the unexpected.

Thanks for your thoughts.
I think I zoomed in too far... It's about 1/3 the way from center to the side; here's the wider view.
You can hear and feel the air escaping, but I had to use liquid leak detector (I have it for chasing air leans in our motorhome's air system) to find it.
The reason I'm pretty sure several cords are cut is that I was able to place a think Allen key along the length and the sound would change over about a 3/16" length; making me think that air was escaping along that a cut that was that long.
I know any repair shop won't touch it (I've always heard that shops won't repair an MC tire).

I suggest that repairing the damage like that will be expensive in terms of risk to such a critical component. My suggestion would be to search Craigslist and Marketplace as I see people selling tires at very low prices. The Gold Wing is a popular bike and there is a good chance someone will have a matching tire available. The tire may be older than desired (>6 years), but is much less risky than the repair proposed. That is my 2 cents worth.

I'd go with a new tire...100% eliminates trouble from repairing the old tire, and theres not a lot of things in life you can 100% on.
If moneys an issue *shrug* Ive patched HOLEs, as in punctures, ( using a patch on the inside). Seeing cords is bit of concerning. Its not hemorrhaging air so thats a plus.

I see that there is a place not that far away that has used tires at very low prices. This could get your friend by for the remainder of the riding season and allow time to “gear up” for a new set. I am hopeful the information is useful.

Heavy bike+cord/belt showing sounds like a blowout is coming. I’ve ridden on several plugged tires for a long time. It doesn’t always work out.

Pm sent

Yeah, jeez, if he had access to a tire changer and it was just a round nail hole, hmmmm, man, that's a hole I don't like on a Wing, 50cc scooter, sure, Wing. And, I've plugged a new tire and rode to CO and back from OH, but this is a jagged laceration.

Interesting place Robert. About 160 miles from here. The Wing rear wheel is not too hard to remove, so if they had his size, potentially he could ride they ( it'll hold air for longer than the ride), and have them mount a tie.
Thank you

No worries Jorge. Always want to keep riders enjoying their bikes.

Jorge the best thing to do would be to replace it, but if ya gotta do it,,, it's usable if he's careful.

Question; Is he going to have the tire removed from the rim or will you/he be doing it?
Reason I ask is; if he's having it done, no shop will touch that repair.
If you/he are doing it put a very good patch on the inside and fill the cut (from the outside) with super glue gel or some type of rubber cement..
ie; I wouldn't use the rope type that pushes thru the hole as they will stress the cords more.

If you/he repair it, ride it slow and EZ and keep an eye on it.

Ride safe, Ted

I put that tire on for him, probably will.do whatever gets done.
There is an offer for tires with abouts 50% life left, but older Wing (180/60 vs 200/55 specified). He's researching if it'll work.
I don't think I would be comfortable patching because of the cut steel cords. That would put a lot of flexing at that spot, putting a lot of stress on the patch.
My view:
Option A: use the offered tire (if it fits)
Option B: fill the tire to max allowed pressure and ride it to the used tire place
Option 3: Save $$ for a new tire.

Here's another idea; darkside.

Tire will be cheap, last a LONG time, and be safer than that time bomb tire that's on there now.

He can go back to a motorcycle tire later.

No, think about it, if every person who has responded to this thread gave $10, he would have had almost enough for a new tire, just sayin....

Now you've done it.

Oh? Is there some history that I should know about?

Yes, I'm aware of the fact that a motorcycle rim technically doesn't seat the bead of a car tire properly, etc etc.

I'm just thinking that it would be better than a tire that could go pop, especially since the riding style is probably gonna be slow and mostly upright (Goldwing)......

So what's the tea? I'm grabbing my popcorn; what's the history here?

😁

‘Dark Side’ discussions….

Very much like an oil thread, air filter thread, MC tire thread, color thread (everyone truly KNOWS Blue is the best color in all categories) - purposely leaving out a handful of other threads that will take this post off the rails… lol

So, now you know the rest of the story and YEA - you did it…

From my experience, it's a smidge controversial. Kinda like if one were to say that the above tire could be repaired. Steel belted radial car tires are repaired everyday with a plug that has a patch attached to it which can be installed from the inside. Not much controversy about that fix but if you apply it to a motorcycle all of a sudden it is. I'm not saying anything is right or wrong. What I am saying is sometimes we end up in discussions with a lot of responses reminiscent of some that a corporate lawyer might give. We all have opinions. We all have varying levels of risk that we are willing to accept and that makes us all different. Start a car tire thread and I'll start making the popcorn. 😂

Maybe I'll post that FortNine video he did on the Darkside in the Humor or Leftovers thread.

Then?

Unlike some people, Y'all know that "I" would never post anything that would take us off the topic...
So Unlike 2andblue, I'm staying on the discussion about doing a possible repair.

I agree with Jorge that the best option is a new or used tire.
(don't tell anyone I sed that)
But,,,,, "if" you have to do a repair, and "if" you could do the repair using the old style Hot Patch,
the repair would be plenty strong for the riding you described.
(even if the patch was a blue/worst color patch)

OMG!! I didn't realize that.

Bud!! Help me!!!
How do I change that awful color??

That color is "almost" as bad as;
,,,,,going to the Dark Side on yer tire,
,,,,,,,,,,,buying a cheap air filter,
,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,or "not using" Shell Rotella T in yer bike...

PS: Irene buy the guy a Shinko for his "Old"wing and tell Jorge to hurry up and install it..

Though it is bright cherry red.... 😎😎😎

Is this me starting something else?!? 😁

Sorry, Jorge! It seems we've hijacked your thread....

Tires!! Hot Patch it or replace it with new/used. Those are your options.

I think a patch would hold just fine. :)

And what about purple? They ever make a purple Connie? Split the difference.....

#TeamPurple

🤣

Why didn't I ever notice that? 🤣 Zack must lock down your account so that you must live with the beautiful BLUE 💙 color.

Dude, REALLY?!?

Looks like I'm gonna be on the hunt for new bodywork, fairing, and tank......

😈

There should be a list somewhere listing the colors by year, so u can hunt for that special year. Just don't make the horn play 'I love you, you love me,......lol

Again, Jorge, sorry for the hijacking.... Its outta my hands!!! (not really)

Let us know if you want us back on topic. Otherwise?

I vote yes, LOCK IT DOWN, LOCK IT DOWN!

I mean....... 🤣

@Zack
There’s a good looking Barney bike (purple) C-10 on FB market place tonight for $1500.

HA! I'm not in the market quite yet, but can you post some of the pics here? I have FB blocked on my home network.

Thanks!
