JB Weld for footpeg brackets

So, this makes the third time I have laid my Connie down. The first time it happened was nearly a crash, but I managed to get the bike stopped before dropping it. I had gone through a bit of mud. :-[ The second time happened as I was trying to make a u-turn. :'( This time it happened as I was parking in a spot with some loose sand. My front tire started to slide and went sideways and then so did my bike. Right onto it's right side breaking the foot peg bracket. If it had been the peg itself it would have been a $10 dollar fix, but this is going to cost me $60 dollars instead.  :mad: So, now I am looking into JB Welding it back together to give me a few days until I can get my hands on a new used part. I know they have a JB Weld for aluminum and I'm just hoping it'll hold up until I can get the part in. I would like to say this will never happen again, but I can't kid myself. I have a problem. I'm a Connie dropper. All I can ask for is a daily reprieve.  :truce: Does this mean I have to get a sponsor or something? Maybe JB Weld will sponsor me. :D
 
Steve, I recommend that you get Canyon Cages and Rear Bag Guards from MC Enterprises to protect your bike. They're worth the price to keep other things from breaking in the unfortunate event of a drop, or even a crash as some have posted. I'm a Connie Dropper, too. I didn't have the protective cages on my first Connie, but I've got them on my current one. They give me peace of mind and a place to mount my highway pegs. I also recommend the book and DVD set, Ride Like a Pro. Lots of good information there - especially for a top-heavy bike like the Connie.

You can also post one of your drops in the Connie Droppers Anonymous (CDA) thread on the forum. There's nothing anonymous about it, by the way. Just a place for us droppers to share our shame.
 
I wouldn't try JB such a critical part... Severity of a failure way too high to risk it.
BTW... I have the Rivco bars, fronts only, and I can attest that they keep things from breaking, even after repeated drops. I've tested them several times, on purpose for the benefit of COGdom, I'd course :)

How long have you owned it?

"I'm just hoping it'll hold up"  -  I have to say that I wouldn't risk my life "Hoping" it would hold.
Do the job right and get the proper part, even if you can't ride for a few days.  No sense risking an accident or worse.
I agree JB is not going to hold well enough to ride it safety.

So you laid the bike down and the ONLY thing wrong was the foot peg bracket?
No scrapes or rashes etc?  If so, count yourself lucky as most people that lay their bike down do a lot more damage.

Kz, did you really just say that? I rode for a short time in my 20's and now 28 years later I am riding a 2000 ZG1000. It was a huge leap to go straight to such a big bike, but I am too big at 6' 280# to be riding around on a 250cc. Besides, the price was right. I have no problem with this bike when it is moving and I am getting much better at handling it even at slow speeds. This latest incident had more to do with loose sand that I was parking on. Trust me, anyone could have dropped it in this case. Wizard, I wish I had been more patient, but I have already ordered a new part and am spending more money than I apparently should have. I figured that if I went to the forums for the part it might take longer to get. I will know better next time. Because of the way that the bracket broke I believe the JB Weld will hold the weight and I only need it to last about a week for the part to get here. As for extra damage, I'm strong. when it starts to go down I try to lower it as gently as possible. It just happened to catch that peg this time.
 
No offense intended...speaking for my self if I had dumped something three times I would be trying to figure out if it's me or the bike and make the adjustment to reduce the chances of it happening again.

I think your being too optimistic about the JB Weld.

Just curious, is that bike your only mode of transportation, so you feel you have to fix it and ride it because you can't wait for the part?
 
I may be being optimistic about the fix. I really don't want to have to wait to be able to ride it because of a foot peg. I was able to ride it home with the peg broken so if it broke off again I wouldn't be stranded, but I started thinking about the peg possibly going under the bike or even bouncing down the road and hitting someone else. I suppose I should probably wait until I get the new part, but I hate that. I am not a patient person. I knew when I got this bike that this was likely to happen a few times. I've been riding steady for about 3 months so I am still a noob and I am a noob with a powerful heavy bike. But I chose this bike for a lot of reasons and I love it for many more. I might add to my bike collection from here, but I will be the last owner this Connie ever has.

Well then you better NEVER test ride a C-14 unless you can add it to your collection.  :D :rotflmao: :)

But there are so many other bikes out there that only 1 Concours is needed in my book - you get my point, right?
 
Silver, I posted this last night and when I started reading this morning I had already bought the part to replace the peg and the JB Weld I was planning to use. I'm not trying to prove anyone wrong. I appreciate the advice I have received and have heeded it. I want a C-14 eventually, but I think I will always keep my C-10. I'm not sure what I will eventually own. I rode my dad's cruiser and I liked it a lot too. Regardless, I love riding and can't stand not being able to. It's like not being able to breathe.

Keep using JB Weld on parts like that and it might be the last bike you ever ride. Do it right or don't do it at all. JB Welding a foot peg on a bike is foolish. You got out cheap only breaking a foot peg. Maybe the broken part will fly off on the freeway and bounce into someones windshield.

Sorry but this is irresponsible.

You don't know how much you are blessed.

We in the North can't ride 4-5 (or more) months out of the year.
And your worried about not riding for a few days?

Do you think we don't love to ride either?  I assume almost everyone on this forum loves to ride.

A little patients is a good thing and might make the difference between a good ride and a bad one.
If you have an accident and didn't die but were in a Hospital  - well according to you - you would die anyways because you could breathe.  :-\
Are you willing to risk that, instead of waiting a few days for a part to come in?  It's your call.............and your life.  Good Luck.

It's not like I was going to go forever with it like that, but after thinking about it a little I realized that there was a possibility of bad things happening. I even said that. I suppose I should probably wait until I get the new part[/size] I suppose you folks have never tried to fix something temporarily until you could fix it right. It's not like I have absolutely no experience. I worked in muffler shops for 13 years, but hey, I don't know everything and am able to admit that. However, I feel like I was virtually attacked for ever thinking about it and right now I can't tell you how glad I am to have joined such fine folks. I mean really. This is my very first post and you are jumping on me in pairs and using caps which is equal to YELLING at me. Sorry if I offended you but when I was young I didnt listen too well and yelling at me was about the only way to get through my thick head. Just trying to tell you you might be headed down a bad path. Looks like we got your attention. Never meant to degrade you or piss you off just trying to save you from a possible bad situation. Maybe one day I will tell you about the shifter I made out of a pair of vice grips on an old Suzuki T-500. Never did go back to look fo it!

I guaranty every member has a story to tell about something they thought would work that in hindsight was really stupid and wished someone would have told them not to do it! I think you will fit in just fine.
 
Ok, maybe I was being a bit thin skinned. I felt like I was walking out on a limb just telling people about this. When this happened I wasn't at home and was able to ride home so I thought that if it fell off I wouldn't be stranded, but that wouldn't have been the worst of it and I hadn't thought that far. I really do respect others advice, but I'm no kid. I'm 48 years old and riding steadily for the first time in my life so I naturally feel like anything I do is wrong. I'm trying to do things right, but if I listened to all of the advice I have been given I probably wouldn't own a Connie. I would still be riding 35 mph on a 250cc in a parking lot somewhere. Don't get me wrong, I have been very careful to work my way up to the point I'm at now and I did take the beginner safety course here in Texas and got my license. I have no desire to die or even crash on this bike. I know it's always possible, but there is a fine line between respect and fear. So I will wait and get it fixed right. As for summer or winter, I will be parking my bike in the summer when the heat reaches 95 degrees everyday and I plan to do a strip down to replace tires, brakes, fluids, etc., etc.
 
Glenn, thanks for that link. I might consider that for the future. This time there was a piece of the old bracket sticking out that I was able to rest my foot on to get me home. I would rather never drop my bike again, but I suppose it could happen.
 
Steveman,forgive the boys they are under riding and its getting to them.But no and you realized it JB weld no be best fix.Now if you have the broken pieces,call around for a good/excellent aluminum welder kind of person.Have the broken one to keep on board for a spare(under the OEM luggage rack in a ziplock bag).It will make you less anxious in the future.  The Wizard
 
didja ever consider removing the bracket, taking it to a weld shop, and having them weld it up??????

I'm with Steveman on one thing... I'll keep the Connie even after I drop three times. I did drop it on loose sand/pea gravel - the 1st time :-[
I don't know how many times I've dropped it (sorry KZ). I'll admit that I'm a klutz. That's why I KNOW the Tip-Over bars work.

Stick around. Sometimes we can be a little blunt (OK, maybe very blunt), but we generally mean well, and even if there's the rare bird that doesn't, he's so far in the small minority that you vwn go ahead and ignore it.

I didn't really consider taking it to get it welded, but if I were going to keep it as a spare that might be a good idea. Either that or I could just get hold of Wizard next time. Regardless, I am waiting until I get the part to ride the bike. However that link about grinding it does sound like a good idea. I would prefer to never drop her again, but just in case I have to do something. I am planning on getting together enough scratch to order the highway bars from Murph's.
 
The foot peg grind will save your peg bracket from snapping.  :great:

4-time dropper here, and not proud of it at all. But each one was a lesson well taught.

The first lesson: Connie is fast, tall and top heavy. Like a couple women I know  ;D

Can't tell you how many times I dropped my '94 but I do recall having snapped off three footpegs thus far...he said proudly. Finding an experienced welder who's done aluminum and pot metal is THE way to go. Special rod, gas and technique. Seek and ye shall find. It ain't rocket science and there's no simple work around.
 
Well, I don't know if that makes me feel better or not, but at least I don't feel alone. As for my interactions with people, I am socially challenged face to face so you can imagine how that might translate on the computer. Everyone had my safety and the safety of those around me at heart. I have a couple more days til the new part gets here and I will likely look for a good welder also. I'm planning a 120 mile trip very soon to the casinos in Louisiana. It should be a fairly easy trip traffic wise so I'm looking forward to it.
 
You will all be glad to hear that the new footpeg bracket came in today. I would be in the garage putting it on right now, but my wife insisted on me eating dinner first. Who needs food. My bike has been down for a week now. food can wait....lol  :)

I assume it's on and dinner is over.  OK well wait till you get back from getting your fix after being held back from riding for a week.

I'll have pictures tomorrow. Riding was awesome. I'm trying to fix my dad's bike for him, so I rode over to his house and took a little detour to the ferry down the road from my house. The water just seemed to be a bit bluer for some reason. It was rather odd since it's the San Jacinto River and the water is usually brown...lol :rotflmao:
 
It took me a bit to figure out how to get my pictures transferred from my phone to my computer so I could post them here, but this is my 2000 C-10 and many of you might recognize the foot peg bracket. J.B. Weld wasn't going to fix this. I don't know what I was thinking.

No repaint. It is supposed to be a 2000, but maybe they started using that paint sooner or something. She is in excellent condition with a little over 23k miles. it's a California model and it was completely garage kept until I got it. Still is.
 
Always liked that color. Came close to buying one, but by the time I called, it was gone.

Thank you Jorge and Glenn, if my bike is getting newer it's the only thing around here getting newer...lol. I love her. She runs great and get's lots of attention. I hate to admit I don't wash her often enough, but I am working on that. Just bought a whole bunch of cleaning supplies. She has one small dent in the tank that she had before I got here. I'm not sure what if anything I should do about that. Maybe just get a tank bra to cover it up. :great:
 
Tank bra is a great addition; especially if it covers something you don't want to see.
Washing is overrated... you wash the bike when the weather is nice. You ride the bike when the weather is nice. Ride or wash :017:    RIDE!  :motonoises:
Mine is in pretty good shape, and I do wash and even wax it once in a (great) while.
